Question about Oregon Scientific Electric PTO Clutch for Cub Cadet, MTD and Warner

The electric clutch on my cub cadet lt1045 does not stay running

When I start to use the mower, the pto will turn on just fine, but then after you mow a few mintues it shuts off. Sometimes I can get it going again, but it usually quits at least once every round I do. I just had it in to cub cadet dealer for this problem and he replaced a relay (and charged me $35 to replace a perfectly fine belt) but it still acts up all the time.

I had the exact same issue early this mowing season on a LT1045 with 184 hours on it. On a wild hunch I lifted the seat and simply sprayed the PTO shut-off safety switch with electronic contact cleaner/enhancer and have had to problems since.

So, it's not the relay, and the clutch does work- when it's working. Have you checked the wiring connections; from primary to relay, from switch to relay, from relay to clutch, etc. Also, I would check the switch contacts and the engage switch itself. It may be defective.
One way to possibly track down the problem is to start the mower in neutral and engage the PTO. While the mower is running and the deck is engaged, go over the wires and connections to see if you can find the source of the problem by giggling the plugs and connections. Just be careful of the rotating blades!

Why it has not been mentioned I do not know, but the most likely problem when the clutch works with the mower cold, but will not re-engage when hot is simple misadjustment of the clutch magnet gap. Very VERY easy to fix. Just get underneath with a thickness guage and tighten the 3 lock nuts until you can just barely move a 0.012" shim in and out of each of the three slots between the adjustment nuts. The shim should travel about 2/3rds if the way to the core of the clutch. As the coil in the clutch gets hot, electrical resistance increased and the power of the clutch decreased; this is why it will work cold but not hot. If the clearance is beyond 0.018", clutch enguagement will be slow and unreliable.

Rider will not turn over more than once no matter how many times I try.

I sounds like there's significant resistance to the engine turning over. I experienced this when the electric PTO/clutch seized - and the mower was trying to turn over the engine AND the mower blades because the PTO wasn't disengaging. Try taking the mower belt off the PTO and see how the engine turns over. If it's still slow, the problem is in the engine. If it spins normally, replace the PTO clutch. BTW - when my clutch seized, it also burned out the PTO switch. The switch is pretty inexpensive, so if you're replacing the PTO/clutch (I found one online for about $175.00 - MUCH more expensive at the dealership) - you should probably replace the switch as well.

I have a 2005 Cub Cadet LT1042, Spec. No. PS-SV590-0003, but my parts manual also lists part numbers for the LT1045. The clutch part no. given for your model is 717-04174.
Hope this is helpful.

The clutch has it's own brearings in it. You have to replace the hole PTO.Sometimes you can find a Aftermarket PTO clutch. There usually A little cheaper.

Blown fuses when mowing

you have a wire that is shorting out somewhere, i would trace the wires from the clutch all the way back to the fuse including the relay and pto switch. You will more than likely find your problem in the control circuit between the fuse, pto switch and relay since this is what is fuse protected.
