An E4 error code on your 45 model tankless water heater, indicates that there is an issue involving the flow meter sensor (also referred to as cold water temperature sensor.) This means that the flow meter is not sending a signal to the computer which starts the machine.
Possible broken wire, poor connection or faulty sensor.
Whirlpool no longer sells water heaters ... but in the past, they sold the AO Smith brand flue damper and atmospheric heaters ... both use different Honeywell gas controls.
Possible that the pump is faulty, check to see if it is running, if not check power to pump, if power is okay, and the pump is not running, then it's the pump. look up pdf fault finding f24 for additional help.

that error code means not enough gas.
however, there might be something going on with your venting. it could be sucking exhaust air back into the unit. this will cause the same error code.
if your problem is intermittent, then I would suspect the venting to be the issue.
hi pete here ill try and help this could be 2 things check the sensor on the unit the outher one is a qustion has the gas company changed your meter latley and turned off you gas and not come back to light your poilet because this code also means not enough gas or wrong type of gas
