The power button on the GE dryer is a piece of junk, made to break. All the buttons are made of a glued on plastic bracket that will eventually break off. The power button goes first because it is used most. There are two ways to go. Either replace the entire panel, for about $140 or simply remove the broken piece. Now when you want to turn on the dryer just put your finger below the little light and press the button by hand. Works fine, costs nothing. To remove the button, you remove one small screw from the top moulding piece. Pull off the round dial in front. Remove the long screw under the dial on the left side. Now slide the entire panel upward about 2 inches. Remove the two small screws on that moulding piece that just got exposed. Lift the panel off, remove the power wire. Remove the 6 or so screws holding the circuit panel in place. Remove the broken piece of junk power button and put the thing back together again. GE should be ashamed to make a product like this.
Sounds like simply the mechanical aspect of it has failed somewhere. Get your complete model # and enter it into the search box at repairclinic.com. You should be able to order a new one and replacement is possible if you're adept at all with such repairs . . Sounds like a reasonably fix. .
