TOYOTA COROLLAS SUFFER PISTON RINGS CAUSING THEM TO BURN OIL BUT YOU DONT JUST REPLACE PISTON RINGS AS THERES A MODIFIED BLOCK ALSO IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO CHECK YOUR INLET MANIFOLD FOR OIL AS THERE IS A CHECK VALVE (BREATHER) WHICH ALOWS OIL INTO THE INLET MANIFOLD CAUSING RAPID OIL BURNING I WOULD GET THIS PROBLEM SORTED ASAP AS SOON YOUR EM LIGHT WILL COME ON DAMAGE YOUR CATALYST AND IT WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED

SOURCE: excessive oil consumption with no noticeable leaak

Check your PCV valve, Does It Smoke ? Seems if it is not leaking in order to use a lot of engine oil it would have to be noticably burning oil causing smoke from the tail pipe...

Excessive oil consumption on my Pontial Torrent 2006

In the great plan of things simply claiming excessive oil consumption is not enough. You think you know what you mean but how much is excessive?

Car manufacturers insist before taking any warranty action for excessive oil consumption a test must be carried out to decide whether the consumption is excessive and whether repair will be economic. Even though your car isn't under warranty the principle generally will be the same.

An oil consumption test is carried out after a few basic checks and means topping up the oil exactly and then driving 750 miles of mixed town and country driving that doesn't include any sustained high speeds or heavy congested traffic. The oil is then checked and topped up exactly and if the quantity is less than 1 litre it is considered acceptable due to any improvement being uneconomic to achieve.

How many miles is your car covering per litre?

Of course if the engine is producing smoke things are somewhat different...

What is the solution to excessive fuel consumption of my 1999 Toyota Corolla

A serviced and correctly timed engine should return decent fuel consumption if driven properly regardless of age. Obviously that return depends on certain conditions. A gentle right foot avoiding harsh acceleration and braking always helps as does where you are driving, busy stop start town traffic and frequent short journeys will reduce efficiency.
So, things to check:
  • Oil and filter change
  • Air filter
  • Tyres at correct pressure
  • Spark plugs, leads, coils condition
  • Fuel leaks
You will never get near the advertised consumption figures as these are recorded under ideal test conditions and I have never encountered them whilst I am driving, but you should be within 10-20% of that figure if driven conservatively.

Loss of engine power and excessive oil consumption

You had the codes read out at a local parts place? Most will do it free.
Oil has to be going some place. If it's not on the road, then I would certainly expect smoke. The performance may have nothing to do with the oil consumption, you should not assume they're connected. I had similar oil loss, turned out to be a leak in the oil filter, only leaked when on the road, not in my garage.

Has anyone had a problem with excessive oil consumption?

just about everyone does with either an old car or a new car with high mileage.how excessive? is oil consumption.well first thing is to check for oil leaks either underneath the motor or any oil lines feed into the motor .any major leaks would be pretty noticeable.if none are present then one would assume that your motor is burning the oil through the exhaust system .check to see what color smoke is coming threw the tail pipe.blue or black smoke indicates oil burning white will indicate engine coolant burning.in any case some color smoke is normal just depends on how much.so lets say your exhaust smoke is normal still could be burning oil just not a noticeable amount.on average you shouldnt have to add anymore than 2 quarts a month or every 1000 miles .depending on your driving conditions if you are having to add more than this there would be a leak some where or heavy color smoke.keep up on oil changes and always add lucas oil usually 1 quart its alot thicker than conventional oil so it reduces engine wear and will handle any small leaks in the engine components like the pistons and rings.if problem still present get to a dealer or certified mechanic as soon as possible good luck.

Abnormal exhaust smoke

definitely an oil consumption problem. How many miles? Could be worn rings and or valve guides. The oil light on when hot indicates low level or possible or weak oil pump. Check compression for possible head gasket or cracked head. I wouldn't drive it untill diagnosed.

Excessive oil consumption

Several ideas.
1) When the dealer completed servicing it, did you check the oil to see if it was full? If it wasn't it would need added oil sooner.
2) .9 litre does sound excessive, but what was it using before?
3) Find a way to give the bottom side of your Toy a really good flashlight inspection to look for leaks and seepage.
This should give you a clue as to what is going on.
If it is dry underneath, someone needs to check the oil weekly until a pattern is established of oil usage.
Be blessed.

black smoke when driving.(not slowing down)is an indication that the rings are shot.(engine rebuild)exhaust will smell of oil.black smoke on deceleration indicates valves stems worn.(head rebuild)
