Question about Garmin Nuvi 680 GPS Receiver

Keeps Losing Sattelite Connection

It takes forever to find the satellites, always asking me the three questions (are you indoors? is this the date? are you in this state?). Does that all the time. Then when it finds a connection, it will lose it in 2-5 minutes. Sometimes it will find it again, and then lose it again. Most of the time, it just will never stay connected. I have tried REPEATEDLY reinstalling the lastest software. NOTHING inside my car has changed, electronically. The GPS's position inside the car hasn't changed. I still use it in the same places I have been when it was working correctly. Very disappointed in this product.

Try making surte the battery is fully charged by AC charger, do not rely on DC plug to fully charge the unit. Also depending on age use and abuse ( starting car while connected to DC) replace the battery and you should be on your way again

My gps continues to look for or acquiring satellites went through montana, yellow stone, wyoming and is still is looking for satellites. Continues to ask trouble tracking satellites are you indoors now? ...

ahhaaa If you want a wonderful lost weekend away from it all Then use a GPS.

Your main problem is that your battery is too low to find and make a connection. You may also want to check that you have the right Baud rate and port set. Check in the manual. But basically the battery is sogged.

Never plug it to the car power and start the engine and always charge with AC or USB prior to any trip.

If it can't find a satellite it will always think you are somewhere where you last were connected and because the power is low it concludes you are inside

The date that my Nuvi operates on is incorrect

Nuvi 200 - trying to reset the date using the method suggested by Kevin A (and in a cellar) and after two hours the Nuvi was still "locating satellites". Am I doing something wrong?!

My main problem, however, is that having loaded a copy of the latest European maps onto the card used in the device, when going through the "where to" routine I am asked to enter State/Province. Living in the UK this is a little difficult as there is no answer I can give that the unit will recognise! Any ideas?

Takes forever to locate satellite

I have a garmin NUVI i wish i can email you a picture but i cannot. This proves nothing tho but to tell you i had the same issue and the issue was the software got corupt on the device due to a bad battery, Not this is not always the case so i do welcome you to investigate but at least give me some face time with my arguement here. these unit are battery powered and there little small pocket pc so to speak there software is stored into Flash memeor inside witch can become corupt and take forever to load the gps mosule you are having issues with.

things to give a shot here.

1. corupted software try a complete reload.
2. how long you had that battery? Couple years? well betterys have a certain life cycle recharges.
3. if after a reload and battery the unit still does not work you can entertain repair.

I takes close over 3 minutes for my garmin 765T to locate a sattelite and I leave in a major east coast city. is something wrong with the system or is this normal

Holding the satellite signal strength indicator icon (upper left hand corner of screen) for a few seconds with your finger brings up a visual display showing signal strength of various satellites, accuracy, speed and elevation.

From a cold start - I too have experienced 2 to 3 minute wait times for satellite aquisition, so I would presume this is a normal. I own three different Garmin units apart from the 765T and satellite aquisition times vary on all three, most aquire satellites in under 4 minutes. Traffic on the other hand seems to take a while to load as this is dependent on availability in your area.

Acquisition of satellite speed has been addressed in new firmware / system software updates for the Garmin Nuvi 200W .

I can help you fix your Garmin Nuvi 200W.

There are three steps to take to get your Nuvi running like new:

  1. Back up your Favorites.
  2. Perform a Hard Reset.
  3. Download and then run Garmin WebUpdater to replace its firmware / system software.

I hope that helps.

Unit taking long time to establish satellite connection?

5-7 mins is not unusual in many cases. Battery condition has a lot to do with the time it takes to establish connection. Recharge or replkace batteries with better quality ones and keep well charged up if you use rechargeable ones

Nuvi 660 thinks it is in Kansas

Kansas is a default location. It is not getting a sat signal as it asks about being indoors. New GPS or one turned off for a long period of time or moved a large distance while off will need to download a new constellation table before it will be able to function. This may take 20 minutes or so. Unless it is a defective unit, place it where it has a clear view of unobstructed sky. And leave it on a while. Once it learns what sats to expect, it should begin to work.

Nuvi 360 cannot acquire sattelite

There are a few things you can try to restore satellite reception.

1. place your finger over the lower left-hand corner of the screen and hold it there
while pressing the on/off power button. Keep holding your finger there and a window should pop up asking if you want to go into maintenance mode. Select yes. There is an option called "clear user data". Select that option. It will not erase your favorites. It will however, erase any corrupted satellite data and will default you back to some factory settings. This will clear some of the memory allowing your Nuvi to collect new satellite data. Your Nuvi should reboot and it will ask you a couple questions like, timezone, language. Please select the proper settings.

Make sure the antenna is up and that you are outside. On the main screen, you will see a satellite bar graph in the upper left-hand corner. Touch the bar graph and you should get a satellite map, showing the satellites. If your Nuvi's receiver is working ok, you should see horizontal hollow bar graphs appear on the right. Eventually they will turn solid blue. This indicates they have downloaded the proper data from the satellite. When you have (4) solid blue horizontal bars (4 satellites), you will see the top panel begin to show improved accuracy and your Nuvi will then work as it should. This entire process make take 30 minutes or less.

If you don't see any bar graphs, your Nuvi may ask you severl minutes later, if you are indoors. If your outside, select no. It will then ask you if you have moved 1000 miles since your last use. Select yes. This will cause your Nuvi to start looking for
satellites, trying to locate your new position.

Now, if you still don't see any bar graphs, then your antenna may have a problem. There is a known issue with the Nuvi antenna where a part has failed, causing the Nuvi to no longer use its internal antenna and it's now always looking for an antenna at the external antenna port (the gold connector on the side of the Nuvi antenna). If you have a piece of small wire, a couple feet long, you can insert that into the center lead of the external antenna jack. Most likely, you'll begin to see bar graphs after a few minutes and your Nuvi will lock.

I haven't been able to identify yet, which part has failed. I am working on that.
However, if the piece of wire works, you can always go on eBay or a retail store and
purchase an external antenna for your Nuvi. They are magnetic and can either stick to your roof or any metal surface within your vehicle.

Here's another way to determine if your antenna has failed and will have to be replaced:

At the main menu, pres on the "wrench" symbol. Then press the "gear" symbol and then press "about". There is a field marked "GPS S/W". There should be a number next to it. It may be "2.9" or "3.0". That is good. That tells you that the main board in the GPS is communcating with the antenna receiver. If you see "0.0" then your antenna is defective and there's no way to repair it other than replace it.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance to you.

Garmin's KNA-G510 won't find satellites unless I tell it I'm in another state and it expands satellite search

I have the g510 with a kenwood head unit. On the satellite screen, on the left it only shows one satellite and on the right it is showing that there are upwards of six or so satellites that it is receiving reception from. I thought it might be the antenna, so I bought a new one. Still having the same problem. It cannot find my location. I've updated the software, I don't know what to do!!
