Question about Gateway MP8708 Notebook

1 Answer

I have a Gateway MP8708 lappy. While surfing the net it powered down on me. Now it does not respond to depressing the power button. It will not show that it is charging when I put the charger in.(Charger verified to be working correctly with other laptop) There are no leds showing any signs of life. The funny thing is though I can hear what sound like four to five ticks that are very light in volume and happen every 20~30 seconds or so.(charger not plugged in) It is coming from the center of the notebook. Not the HDD or CD/DVD player....actually it is happening with more frequency as I type this post. I doubt this a faulty DC power issue from what i have seen so far. Almost a little nervous to leave unattended with the "ticking" sounds it keeps making. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Take the battery out and try to boot it on AC power only, if the machine boots but can't load the operating system then the ticking sound could be and sounds like the hard drive has possibly failed.

Good luck.

Need to replace cmos battery in Gateway MP8708

Power down PC. Open the PC tower. Look at the motherboard and find the CMOS battery. Looks like the picture below. Make sure you touch some sort of metal area on the PC to ground yourself before touching the components. Use something thin to pop the old CMOS battery out. The CMOS batteries are usually universal. CR2032 is the usual type used. These can be found at a CVS or Walgreens. Once you have acquired the next battery, make sure the CR2032 is facing up and just press it in.

Gateway MP8708 Won't boot past BIOS and won't boot into CD/USB/Safe Mode on XP - Blank screen with keyboard dead - Num locks on and wireless light

Windows won't start up? Well, try this Download Tenorshare Data Recovery from its offical site and install it. Burn it into CD/DVD, or USB flash, put into the computer you need to repair, Bios setting. It can make sure your important data will not lose. Best of luck

I have a gateway mp8708 and it wont charge, boot, or even power the charging led. i tested the charger and itd fine. what could be the problem?

One of two things are likely your problem:

1) The battery is so dead that it's preventing any power from reaching the rest of the PC. Try pulling the battery out, plugging the laptop in, and turning it on.

If that doesn't work,

2) The motherboard power converter is burned out. If this is the case, unfortunately you will need a replacement motherboard or a replacement laptop.

Good luck, and hope this is helpful!

Cannot find my recovery disk for my gateway mp8708. need some guidance. Got rid of several old computers over the holidays and expect that disk got put with one of the ones I gave to Goodwill.

Gateway has a site on the topic

http://support.gateway.com/s/software/medialess/faq/suppage01su44.shtml

If your system is intact, you can create the recovery CDs, following the instructions.

If not, you need to order a new set.

There is no legal place to download recovery CDs, since they contain copies of the Microsoft OS.

Get the service manual of your laptop, if not possible try websites like: http://www.insidemylaptop.com/ they have a lot of disassembly guides.

Trying to hook up a links wrt150n to terby net

Step 1. Connect your computer to the router. Did it get an IP address? If so, try to browse to the IP address of the default gateway. If not reset the router configuration (see below:)

Step 2. There should be a small hole in the back of the router. Turn off the power, stick the end of a paperclip into the small hole to depress the reset button, hold down the button while you power the router back on, wait a minute then take the paper clip back out.

Step 3. The router should now be reset with the initial configuration, retry step 1.
