He might have dropped it a few times but I dropped mine before too and mine still works but not his
Sounds like when yours dropped the board inside of the DS Lite stayed intact. With his if it dropped harder or at a different angle then the main board may have cracked and thats why his system is in worse shape then yours.
Just know that either way he'll have to get a new system regardless and the best thing I can suggest is to get a protective rubber case for the ds lite so that way in the future if it gets dropped it will be protected better and less of a chance of system failure.
