Same thing happened to my son's - went to www.rca.com then firmware upgrade but no luck. Called the telephone # on the website - they said it cost more to fix it than it is worth.

i dropped mine one day and it started saying this
after hitting it for a while as my natural cave-man instincts would have me do, I held down the joystick and the power button while plugging it in, it connected to the computer (as it had previously failed to do) and I had to profile the songs once more...give it a try, I was just as hopeless as everyone else

Try doing the firmware upgrade. Your PC must detect the Lyra first when connected. If it does not detect it then it is most likely the internal hard drive (this model uses a small hard drive vs. flash memory) that is out of comission. It is true, it is cheaper to get one on Ebay rather than trying to fix it. Hope this helps.

I have just come across the same problem today with the "File System Corrupted" message. It will not let me sync with my computer or play. I have checked the RCA handbook and website. Both do not offer a lot of info on this particular situation. The handbook states to format the player, but that is impossible if the player is not able to connect with the computer. Some later models with the same issue state to hold down the joystick when plugging in the USB cord, but that does not let the player connect with the computer and it does not work during startup. Also, I have noticed it is making a weird 'ticking' noise from the inside, kinda like a fan is not working properly.
