Question about Dometic Heating & Cooling

Dual dometic 62xxxx/63xxxx will not respond in any

2005 Newmar Ventana with dual dometic roof a/c/heatpump units. The models 620515 a/c & 630515 heat pump will not activate in any way. Seems like no juice ... all circuit breakers have been checked, thermo switch turned on and off, etc. .. last used for heat in fall 08, for ac summer 08. these units were trouble from the git go ... delivered from newmar with problems requiring immediated service by Laurelhurst in Portland, OR . I have no owner's manual so I'm pretty much in the dark and there don't seem to be any specialized guys in the Santa Rosa, California area (wine country 90 miles north of SF)
Thanks for your advice in advance ...

Ken.

What type freon for 1998 newmar mountainaire 15000 btu ac unit

Early years were R-22 but the best way to double check would be to contact manufacturer with model and serial number for confirmation.
( dometicusa.com ) for dometic products, or ( http://www.rvcomfort.com/rvp/tech_info/manuals.php ) for Coleman.

We have the Penguin 630515 with the heat pump ..we get a strong musty odor when we use the heat pump or the AC... we have sprayed Lysol into all the duct work and still have it. We have had the roof...

There is a condensate tray under the coil. There should also be a drain hose or port that could be clogged. Take off top of AC unit and pour a 10% solution of bleach and water over coil, follow flow of water to drain and make sure it is working. Pour a very small amount first otherwise you will have water everywhere.

Location of Drain holes on Duo-Therm Model 630035.321

Good place to start is up on the roof. Look way under the unit (hard to see some times) along the bottom, between where the gasket sits on the roof and metal bottom of unit. Should see small round or similar sticking down from unit. There will be a hole in the side of them. Poke around with a wire or something to open them up. If you don't see water/condensation running across your roof from unit when it's operating, (usually in 2 directions, 1 each side of unit) then yup, there plugged.

ROOF AC UNIT ISSUES

Ice on the coil is caused by 3 things; 1, low freon charge. 2, inadequate air flow across the coil, this can be a filter or dirty coil (I think you addressed these) or the fan isn't blowing enough air over the coil. 3, the unit is running continuously. A heat pump has another cause, that is something defective in the defrost system, like the sensor, reversing valve, control board or relay. If the breaker is tripping its because the compressor is over amping. There can be an obstruction blocking the fan or something like #2. Or the compressor is going out. If the breaker doesn't trip on other settings, like cool, but trips on heat, then I would look at the airflow.
