Ricoh MP171 does not have a waste toner container. It recycles used toner back in the developer unit - where it is mixed with new toner and developer powder, and can be used for printing again.
Remove the full waste toner box per manual. Wear breathing protection as there will be toner dust in the air. Place flat in a work area and remove the 6 screws retaining the black box cover and carefully remove cover with box still flat on the work area. Be careful, the box is full of waste toner powder. Dispose of the waste toner by tipping into waste container, being careful not to inhale the powder. Use a blower or vacuum to remove final traces of waste toner from the box and clean all surfaces with a clean cloth. Place the box flat on bench to inspect the clear sight-glass at the front. Inside will be a black flag which should be down on the bottom of the sight glass. If not, there is still waste toner in the front of the box which needs to be shaken or blown out. Replace the cover and 6 screws and replace the waste toner box in the printer. If error message still says replace waste toner box, then you need to check the sight glass again. The flag must be horizontal at the bottom of the glass or it is not completely empty.

Right hand side of machine towards the rear lower small cover two screws at top to remove. Remove bottle empty into plastic bag with no holes in the bottom, then replace old container. Tie the bag off and try not to inhale the powder it is not good for you.
When you purchase a new toner cartridge it mat come with a new waste toner bottle. You can empty the waste toner in a plastic bag, do it in the open air and avoid inhaling toner powder.
The life of the waste toner container unit is approximately 1,250 pages for full color 5% image printing or 5,000 pages for black printing. When the life span of the waste toner container has expired, Replace/Install Waste Toner Tank appears on the display of the control panel, indicating the waste toner container needs to be replaced. Otherwise your printer stops printing.
To replace the waste toner container:
1 Turn the machine off, then wait a few minutes for the machine to cool.
2 Open the front cover.
3 Pull the waste toner container out of the machine using its handle.
--- above from manual, following is my paraphrasing due to lack of pictures --- 4. remove the container cap from the back side and cap the opening
5. take the new waste container out of its package
6. install the new waste toner container.
___________ You may wish to TRY EMPTYING the waste toner, but you will find toner is the messiest and possibly dangerous (inhallation, etc) stuff you've worked with. it is an extremely find powder and can cause an awful mess and is best disposed of by capping and replacing the container with a new one (shop around to find them).
DO NOT attempt to vacuum up toner - just my personal opinion - I suspect many vacuums may not have fine enough "bags" to capture this intentionally very fine dust. BUT Toner vacuums do exist and some "may" work.
Commercially available cool mist humidifiers sonicate
water in order to create a fine mist. In other words, intense
vibration liberates millions of tiny droplets of water from
the reservoir. This water contains all of the salts of the
original tap water. Consequently, over time, you will begin
noticing that a fine white powder covers EVERYTHING in the
room. This is the same stuff that is trapped in the reservoir
of a warm mist humidifier. its harmful but very annoying !
