Question about Dell Inspiron 2200 Notebook

Error code 1046: new hard drive, still problems

I have a Dell Inspiron 2200 laptop that gradually died. Before it went completely kaput I ran a diagnostics test and got:

DTS Short Test Fail
Error Code 1000-0146
Unit 0: DST log contains previous errors

A few of the breakdown symptoms:

[All of these symptoms were progressive. They began intermttently, and gradually became permanent. They did not start all at once, but rather one after another.]

Numbers did not work (except for 5&6 and characters)
Some letters stopped working (but not all)
DVD would not play but CD would.
Internet connection could not be detected.

Tried to reinstall windows.
Would not allow me to reinstall XP (after deleting partitions). Could not get past 40% of files loaded.

XP would not install off DVD.(hmm) But it seemed ok with a CD. Thought maybe a bad DVD. Got install going ok until I came to part where you have to enter product registration code. Found out numbers still don't work (except 5&6 and characters) (more hmmm). [Incidentally, I tested the DVD on another machine and it is ok.]

Any ideas? CPU? Memory? Motherboard?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Since the keyboard and dvd are on different controllers it may be the motherboard but then I have seen weird things when memory goes bad. I would download memtest on another computer and burn it to cd and run it from bootup and test the memory first. If not the memory then motherboard is a likely answer

My Dell Inspiron 6000 won't boot up. It keeps

The DST error code 1000-1046 is definitely a failing hard drive. ..I am not sure why your laptop is not recognizing a CD in the drive, but you should go into your BIOS settings, and in boot sequence, make sure that the CD drive is the first boot device. If you can't boot from a CD, you are not going to get very far with installing a new hard drive...

Hi i have laptop dell"inspiron 2200 when i swithed it on the laptop so it will get open and get stop than start making noise like tooooooooooooooo

Back up your data on an external drive now! It could be the optical drive or the fan but it is most likely the hard drive. If it is the hard drive making that noise, it is about to die. Saving a hard drive is unlikely. You can replace it but you cannot replace your data. Save your data now!

My dell inspirion B120 says that the modular bay not be identified I ran the diagnostics by pressing the f12 key and then it said that the dst short test failed because no drive was detected error code...

0141 is drive not detected, so reseat the optical drive.
If reseating doesn't resolve, reset the BIOS defaults. the next is try another optical drive and if still not detected then a new motherboard

Hard drive not noticable

Go into the BIOS and see if the hard disk is detected.
You most likely have a faulty hard disk.
You can also test the hard drive by inserting it into a USB hard drive adapter and then plug it into a working computer's USB port. If this computer cannot see this device as an external drive and cannot see the contents of the hard drive, then it is definitely faulty. You need to purchase a new hard drive and install Windows to get your Dell operational again.
