Hey, I was unsure what to do. Contemplated the hard reset, but that is always scary. Fortunately I hot sync somewhat regularly - in this case only a few days in advance of this failure. I stopped by the Sprint store, my service provider - and they knew excatly what to do - "happens all the time" - hard reset. Everything was back to normal on the reset as far as functions were concerned, including the phone and keypad functions. Re-synching on returning home re-set all my data, at least to the date of the previous sync. In the end a simple fix but the moral of the story is to hot sync... Hope this helps...

I had the exact same problem but have since fixed it by doing a hard reset - press red phone button while using stylus pen to hit reset button on the back of the phone (need to remove battery cover to find the reset button). WARNING - you will lose all data - contacts, pictures, files, appointments. In my case I didn't care - I just wanted my phone back.
(In theory you should sync up to your PC, then resync after the hard reset. Haven't tried that yet - just so happy to have my phone and dial pad back.)
