Plastic strip fallen off from the ink slide

Hi my son was playing with the printer and pulled a thin plastic stip from the ink slide how do i fix this back on?

You are referring to the encoder strip. They can be reinstalled. They must be threaded through a sensor on the back of the carriage.

The mount at the left side has probably been pulled out of position. If the mount is not sitting properly the strip will be loose and will cause problems. The tension mount has two flanges that must be behind the plate it is mounted on. Good luck.

I can't print my documents. My Printers model is Canon IP2700 and it says there that the error code is 5100. How can I fix the problem? we need the print immediately. Is there any solution we can fix it?


Usually, error code 5100 means some kind of obstruction in the print path, maybe something that had fallen inside the printer, the gears being jammed by something that got loose inside the printer, or ink on the clear plastic encoder/timing strip (a plastic strip about 1/4" in width that you can see running from side to side and connects to the print head).

Clean the plastic strip with alcohol , check if there is nothing blocking the head carriage set (sometimes kids play and hide toys, pens, coins, inside printers, VCRs or any other devices that have "doors"...).

My Lexmark 4 in 1 X5630 printer is saying carrier jam. How do I go about sorting this out?

"Someone tried for hours to reattach my encoder strip, and finally figured out the way to do it after reading many web postings, and my own trial and error. The key is to use a "dental mirror" that you can pick up at a pharmacy or hardware store for about $5. (Perhaps a small compact mirror may also work.) And you need to focus light back there. (I used a head lamp.) The problem is you just can not see the small slot through which the encoder strip must be threaded from the front of the printer. It sits in back of the ink cartridges. This thin slot "tunnel" goes though a rectangular piece of plastic. You can feel the rectangular piece of plastic in back of the ink cartridges, and looking with the dental mirror you can see how small the slots are on the right and left side, through which the encoder strip must be threaded. After "seeing" these small slots using the dental mirror, you then can feel them with the tip of a fingernail, and know exactly what you are aiming for as you then feed the encoder strip through. (It doesn't make any difference of you feed the strip from the left or the right, but the down arrow end of the encoder stip must end up on the right when you later attach it to the wire tab.) I fed the strip "blind" after I had formed a strong mental image of exacly what I was trying to do, and now being able to feel the small slot I was aiming for with the tip of a fingernail. (It is tough working in the small space in back of the ink cartridges, and if you have really big hands and fingers it may be impossible. I did not want to use forceps or tweezers because of a fear of damaging the encoder strip.) The encoder strip then must be attached with the down arrow end on the right attaching to a flimsy looking wire on the right side of the printer. The left end of the encoder strip must be attached to a metal tab on the left side of the printer. You will need to hold tension on the encoder strip, and manually push the sliding ink cartridge back and forth out of the way as you attatch both ends. (It's probably a good idea to gently clean the encoder stip of all your fingerprints and any smudged ink with a tissue after you get it back in place. Also be sure to clean the metal bar the ink cartridges slide back and forth on, so you don't get error message 0502.) Be prepared for this to be a very frustating experience! You will be maddened by how many times it will take to thread the encoder strip though the slot, how difficult it will be to catch the end of the encoder strip on the wire and metal tabs, and how you will have to figure out how to hold tension on the encoder strip so one end won't fall off as you attach the other end. If it's the transparent strip that fell off from the assembly, it's called the encoder strip. It is, somewhat, related to sending information to the carrier's movement on the carrier shaft or the silver rod accross the printer. I'm afraid that can't easily be fixed. But, it would be better to contact Lexmark for assistance. They may be able to help you with that. Hope I can help more on this.

Ink cartridges make a slamming sound from left to right and wont print


The encoder strip is most likely the problem. Unplug the power from the printer. Open the front cover and move the cartridge carrier to the center. You should see a white ribbon cable, a thin plastic strip and a black belt with teeth.
The thin plastic strip is the encoder strip. It rides in a sensor on the back of the cartridge carrier that you will not be able to see. Reach in with the first finger of either hand and carefully strum the strip as if playing a guitar.
The strip will need to be lowered slightly and brought towards you slightly. Please be careful not to break the strip or your printer will not function. Once you believe the strip is set correctly, plug the power back and try printing the self test. If it slams to the left again, the strip is not yet set correctly.
If you cannot repair the strip, please let us know so that we can assist you further.

Please Note: Fixing the encoder strip is a delicate procedure. During the troubleshooting, if the strip breaks, you will not be able to use the printer.

not a head problemm, more like the carriage cant slide or cant read its position on the rail.

Plastic strip fell off


Hi, if you open the open the printer, unit to gain access to install ink cartridge, if you see the metallic end which has got a hook on both the ends left and right side. the ink cartridge runs between the strip from left to right which should be connected above the ink cartridge meta rod.
