Could be your mirror is in the lockup position. Look on page 125 and 257 of the manual.
Removing the battery, and reinserting it. Then switching on the camera, could also do wonders.

Check the metal tabs inside the notable rails as they need to touch the upper part of the rails to allow built in flash to work
Use a micro screwdriver to push the tabs up to the rail

This error is more common then you think.Since you tried most things, I only ask you to do only one thing. AFTER you saved the pictures on the card, just do a basic format (low level) in the camera. Just using the menu of the camera. You don't have to believe me, but cards formatted in other EOS cameras, yes from the same brand, can cause problems. Let alone when the card is formatted in a computer. If one or more cards work fine after you formatted them, and only one won't work, please discard this one.

Take a couple of pictures, over a dark background, if you can see the spec of dust on them, the problem might be in the mirror. Now, if the dust does not appear on the pictures, it's either on the viewfinder, or somewhere else out of the way of the sensor.
You should never try to clean the sensor by hand, always ask a profesional to do that for you.

Hi When the LCD screen is open the viewfinder will switch of and when it is closed the viewfinder will switch on. You can switch between the two by pressing Monitor select button to the left of the Eyepiece (Viewfinder). as you look at the back of the camera.
