A/c is drawing 20 amps and keeps tripping breaker after running

A/c trips breaker after running a few minutes; it is drawing 20 amps, fan motor spins freely, compressor seems really hott after only a short period

If the fan is running and the compressor is getting hot and tripping off you may have a failed capacitor.

The washer tripped the breaker once and OR after the breaker was reset it ran additional loads with no problem then it tripped the breaker again.

Intermittent problems are always difficult to diagnose because the problem usually doesn't occur when you're making the checks.

If the washer ran additional loads the problem will not be an electrical short with one of the washer parts. If the lid switch had a short it wouldn't run additional loads.

To narrow this problem down, there are three places that could be causing the ( outlet) GFCI to trip, a malfunction in the washing machine, a problem with the downstream wiring (aka load side of the GFCI-other items connected on same circuit), or the GFCI outlet itself. If there isn't anything downstream, then plugging the washing machine into another GFCI outlet, or simply swapping out the outlet for a known good GFCI outlet, will identify if the outlet itself is faulty.
If the outlet trips when the washing machine isn't running and isn't even plugged in, then there's a fault in the wiring on the load side of the GFCI outlet.
If the issue is neither of the above, then running the washing machine and monitoring to see which step is occurring when the trip happens will isolate what part of the washing machine may be leaking current to a ground. It could be a certain water level, a motor being engaged, a transition step in the controller, etc
Beware some techs believe that most Washing machines or any other motor should not be on a GFCI! Should be a dedicated single receptacle. If there are other outlets on the washer GFCI, replace that GFCI with a single receptacle and put the GFCI on the next jump in order to protect other outlets.

Another item to check is ur lid switch which may have gotten moister inside and created a short_ or broken open and the rubber seal dried out over time, and the switch assembly will be exposed. water can splash onto the assembly, somehow causing the GFCI to trip. In any event, if you are having trouble with your washing machine stopping mid-cycle for any reason, test and replacing the lid switchis probably a worthwhile idea, as it is cheap and easy to replace.

Coleman Rooftop AC fan stops after 7 or 8 minutes of running. Will turn on again after about 10 minutes on its own.


Remove green (fan run) wire from thermostat, and connect to red wire (power) and see if fan runs, and if it will stay running. That will by-pass thermostat to see if it is problem. If it continues to run, thermostat is problem. If that doesn't cure it, I'd remove cover up top and with power off at circuit breaker, blow compressed air in to motor air holes to make sure it's getting proper air for cooling, as well look for small plastic plug on housing where oil can be added ( few drops) to lubricate motor. Leave cover off and try fan to see if that may help. If at all possible, a clamp on amp meter will confirm if motor or relay is at fault if none of these suggestions help. If amp draw at motor too much, motor may be seizing when warmed up from running. test draw when first started and after running for amount of time that it usually quits, and if noticeable difference, motor is seizing and needs replace. You can also test amp draw at main 120v feed wiring with unit just in fan mode.

Try spinning the fan by hand and see if it rotates freely. If it doesn't it can cause it to draw too much current. You can also get a clamp on ammeter to check the current draw. When you have the compressor running and turn it off, then right back on, there is head pressure built up on the compressor discharge. It is hard for the compressor to start running when it already has that head pressure to pump against and may cause the circuit breaker to trip.

Compressor won't sstay running and trip breaker


You gave a lot of information, but you didn't say if it worked when free wheeling. If not, I would suspect the inertia switch. If it is working, you should hear it click when the motor is winding down after being shut off, at least when free wheeling. A 20 amp breaker will certainly handle a 15 FLA motor, even on startup. They don't trip at 20 amps exactly, especially on a simple overload. Even at twice the rated amperage, it can take several minutes to trip it. They will trip quickly on a dead short, however, or a severe overload. I doubt the windings are shorted or it either wouldn't work (start windings) or would run at a slower speed with the inertia switch constantly tripping in and out with it coasting while tripped in (i.e., accelerate, coast, accelerate, coast, etc.)

Pump trips breaker


If the seals are damaged, water will leak into motor section and cause GFI to trip and yet the pump will seem that it is running fine if plugged into a non-GFI receptacle
