How do i gettop dead center on a 1997 Audi a4 Quattro with the v6 single overhead cam
Line up the timing marks starting with the crankshaft pulley. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise until the marks line up.

Quickest way to find TDC on any engine is to remove no1 plug and place your finger over the hole as some one turns over the engine . When you feel pressure under your finger that means that no1 piston is coming up on compression stroke. Check for the timing mark on the crank pulley and when the marks line up then that is TDC

if your talking about the lock ring on the tank there is a special tool but a brass chisel and hammer can be used to turn the ring until its loose enough to unscrew by hand. if this is about removing the pump from the bottom of the tank then there is a special tool for that also but it can be removed by hand you just have to twist it counter-clockwise. and it will be not be easy to turn but i have done it just have a rubber glove on to pad your hand or its going to hurt.

Ribbed Belt, Removing and Installing
Ribbed belt, removing and installing
CAUTION: Mark the direction of belt travel before removing, using a crayon or marker. Reinstalling a used belt in the opposite direction
could damage the belt
Note: There are two different types of ribbed belt, identified as versions A and B.
Ribbed belt versions, identifying, refer to Application and ID
Removing
Old version A
- Remove ribbed belt guard.
- Loosen ribbed belt tensioner using 15 mm wrench and drift 3204.
- Remove ribbed belt.
New version B
- Using 10 mm hex socket wrench, turn downward in direction of arrow to loosen ribbed belt.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal, noting the following:
- Place ribbed belt over drive pulleys and idler roller first, and onto tensioning roller last.
- Remove drift 3204.
- Install ribbed belt guard.

Passenger side in front of the wheel well. On the audi it is mounted veritical instead of horizontal on the front wheel drive. If you endeavor to replace it, know that you have to loosen a couple of bolts on the fuel tank and wedge a 2x4 between the fuel filter to get a metric wrench on the fuel strap.
