there are no timing on the rotors for a wankel engine. The timing is controlled by a computer for the RX-8. The sensors & distributors can be adjusted on the RX7's & other Mazdas but I know that there were major engine changes to the RX-8 so I can't tell you for sure. I use to have an RX-7 and worked on it all the time.
Check under the vehicle for the height sensor, normally connected to the lower suspension arm. Check for dirt in the connection, snapped drop rod or broken wire.

ok, we here found a problem similar to this, the 2006 RX8 we had has a problem with the sensor at the end of the IMT valve, which lets the computer know weather the valve is open or closed. Have a technician OHM the sensor, IF it reads open and closed, remove the valve, and clean , then clear code and drive.
