Question about Crown Xls 202d Power Amplifier

Open Question

Xls202 crown , I want to add 1/4" jacks for the speaker outputs

Are the " - " , black side of the binding posts connected to chassis ? They appear to be with an ohm meter . I don't have a schematic and would have to tear the thing apart to trace it out to be sure . What I'm wanting to do is drill holes and install 1/4" jacks to make speaker connection easier without having to replace the ends on my cables with "speakons" . the 1/4' jacks , of course , will connect the minus side to the chassis unless I figure out some way of insulating them . Does anyone know this , or know of any problems it may cause ?

Thanks
Ray

It could be the wire[s] to the internal speaker or a dirty contact on the 1/4 inch female speaker output jack. Try pushing a 1/4 inch male plug in and out of the jack a few times. Or, you'll need to remove the chassis to look inside. My email address is computerlen@hotmail.com if you have any further questions.

How to play with headphones

If you have a preamp output jack or a headphones jack on the back- those will work. They should interupt the speaker if you are wanting it for practice purposes.

if you do not have those, and want to add one, tap at the control grid of the Phase inverter ECC83/12AX7A which should be common grid to the final preamp tube, which should also be an ECC83/12AX7A and locate the coupling capacitor so you can tap ahead of it with a .1 microfarad 600 WVDC capacitor or one that matches the factory capacitor in series to the new jack, with shielded audio wire/coax to the new jack location, at the tip and the coaxial jacket should go to chassis ground at both ends. The grid is either pin2 or pin7 depending which way they chose to wire it. I do not have an Orange Amp schematic in front of me.

If you want to risk noise at that location, make it interuptable so when the headphones are removed, the circuit completes to the N/C contact of the headphone jack (which opens/opened when headphone plug is inserted.) back to the grid terminal. with that terminal connected by shielded wire back to the grid.

Instead of adding a capacitor, you can use the factory capacitor, just mount a terminal strip next to the phase inverter and move the capacitor to that new terminal tab and the wire to lead to the tip together on that ear, and the return wire from the headphone jack goes to the now vacated tube pin terminal. .

Look to see if on of the filament/heater pins is grounded to chassis- if so, just ground the sleeve contact of the jack. If it is not, determine which pin is closest to chassis ground potential and run the sleeve contact over to that pin. could be either 4, 5, or 9 Make sure to use an insulating headphone jack.

EL34 outputs should never be connected to a headphone.

Hi! I need two input/output plates for my Kustom floor monitors (KSC10ML). By input/output plate, I mean the unit that has the volume knob plus the two input/ output jacks that is screwed ino the side...

The KSC10ML has NO volume control... only two 1/4 inch jacks. To get a matching "jack cup" you will probably have to go to Kustom. I have searched for the item on the web and only jack cups that seem to come up are for Marshall or ones that use binding posts. I found one blank one but it is 5 by 7 inches... too big for that Kustom cabinet. In a pinch if you don't need it to be recessed, cut metal or ABS plastic plates and drill for two jacks.

I Have a Peavey XR 600B mixer. There are only 2 inputs in the rear for speakers. I want to add more speakers to be used as monitors or just have extra speakers. How can this be done? I only have...

First off it's outputs to your speakers. If you had an extra set of powered or amplified speakers you could "Y" cable your speaker outputs. Your passive speakers won't work without an amp. You really need powered speakers or an amp for your extra speakers. (if you had powered/amp'd speakers you could run them off one of you "aux" out for monitors. Do not daisy chain your speakers connecting twi together, you'll change the resistance/ohms and damage your speakers. Trust me, I do this for a living.

How to connect mixer to a crown power base 2 amp and speakers

just use the main left and right outputs of the behringer to run xlr (3 prong balanced) to 1/4 inch (looks like a big headphone plug) cables into the inputs of the crown amp. the mixer has the xlr outputs and the amp has 1/4 inch inputrs, sop the cables will have to reflect that on both ends. run the outputs of the amp (rca outputs, i believe, you may have to get a rca plug to 1/4 inch jack adapter, and then use a 1/4 inch speaker cable) to the inputs of the speakers, again, the amp has rca outputs and the speakers will likely have 1/4 inputs, so you will have to address that wil an adapter. have each speaker in its own channel.

I feel like a dork asking this question but how do you connect the amplifier to your mixer. I see that there are places for a banna plug however my mixer will not take a 1/4 banna plug.

In case you don't have one, here is a link to the manual:http://www.peavey.com/assets/literature/manuals/80300573.pdf I don't know if you are using a separate crossover between the mixer and the amp but here is the simplest explanation.I just reread your question and I don't even know whether you have a Peavey amp. Run proper cables from the main output of your mixer to the main inputs of your power amp. They will be 1/4"shielded cables or Balanced XLR cables. Do not use unshielded speaker cables to hook the mixer and the amp together.Run speaker cables from the speaker outputs of the amp to the input jacks of your speakers.Make sure the impedance of your speaker cabinets equals or exceeds the impedance rating marked on your amp. Here is the link to the newer model PV2600 manual:http://www.sweetwater.com/store/media/pv2600_doc_manual.pdf Don't use Speakon cables unless your speaker cabinets are equipped with Speakon input jacks. Banana plugs aren't as solid a connection as the binding posts are.

You seem to be the expert - i just got my pmp 4000,,,,i'm a little confused,,i understand the concept of side A for mains,,(mono) and plugged monitors into side B -got sound out of both mains and...

The MON faders ONLY control the output to the MON L and MON R jacks, NOT the split use of MAIN/MON outputs. You MIGHT try varying the MONO fader and see if it varies the MON part of the split output.
Best to use the unit as MAIN L and R to main speakers and use a stereo amp or POWERED monitors driven from the MON L and R jacks. With this, the MON faders will control your monitors as you would like them to.
ALSO make sure ALL equipment connected together is powered from teh same recepacle power system. Powering interconnected equipment from receptacles at opposite ends of the room is asking for damage due to ground bounce and faults.
PLEASE read my tip on here about a HAZARD of speaker polarity if you use Speakon to 1/4 inch cables.

We are having problems with a Behringer PMP5000 board. We have the switch setting on Mon1/Mono. We can get sound out of the monitor output, but the mono output is almost silent. Do you have suggestions...

It is NOT clear what configuration you have set up and what you consider the MONO output is, whether it is the power amp MONO side output or the line level MONO 1/4 inch jack on the top of the unit (this jack is NOT speaker output). If you can run normal stereo speakers using both sides of the power amp in the AB mode, the problems you are having is pilot error.

REMEMBER the main out 1/4 inch jacks are BALANCED TRS jacks... DO NOT put mono plugs into these.

A WARNING: If you use Speakon to 1/4 inch speaker cables, remember that the BARREL of side A is HOT, not the tip!!! You can fry the amp if you inadvertently ground that barrel someplace. (Side B has the barrel grounded) This information is NOT readily available in the manual and results in many a blown amp. They do this to implement the "Bridged" mode easily.

I have schematics and can unravel most any problem you are having.

SELF POWERED SUB BGW M1100

WoW ! Simply remarkable!
I called the company that bought-out BGW in 2003.
"American Amplifiers Inc." California
I talked to Angie who was the best ! she transfered me over to
the Master Tech/Engineer (Larry)
I explained to Larry my problem. He pulled the schematics and we
inspected EACH input /output off the binding posts / large transformer.
21 in all 7 on each side and 7 on top. Larry asked me to identify each colored
wire attached. He discovered the wireing was all backwards and NOT
where they were supposed to be! Disaster in the making! We literally
rewired the hole power grid over my cell phone ! (1 HOUR), double and triple checked each
imput. The subs are back up and thumping hard. (they would be dead without AAI)
AMERICAN AMPLIFIER TECH. INC. IS THE MOST PROFESSIONAL, KIND HEARTED,PEOPLE,READY TO HELP ANY BGW OR AATI CLIENTS I HAVE EVER EVERDELT WITH IN MY (25) YEARS AS A PRO ROAD MUSICIAN!

LOW VOLUME FROM RIGHT CHANNEL OF STEREO 1 SIDE OF SYSTEM

It seems like the speaker jack tip needs cleaning, or the contact has become bent away from the connector and needs to be re-aligned.  The Passport is a portable system, so after years of plugging and unplugging the speaker jacks may be worn.  Try using the "Stereo 2" connectors. You can also try cleaning the jack with electrical contact cleaner, and. a cotton swab.
