Boot problem I just in stalled an maxtor ata 250 gig in my dell dimension 4400. I used partition magic to copy partitions to this drive. It is connected via cable select. You have to set the master boot record to bootable.. I dont know how you would do this in windows, maybe you can do it with grub or something.. or maybe just search google for restoring master boot record(mbr).

SOURCE: booting problem

I'm thinking the boot sector or master boot record was not written to the new disk or is corrupted.

Try running the recovery console from the installation CD and take a look at FIXBOOT and FIXMBR

Turned off raid, unable to access 2nd 160 gig hard

Right click on Computer in the Start menu. You should see manage.
click on manage and you will see some selections the left one called disk management. click that and you should see all your drives. If you disable the Raid you may have to initialize the disk for windows to use it again. right click on the drive and initialize or if it shows up you may have to create a partition and then format.

Need to know how to upgrade a hard drive from a 8 gig to 80 gig

I am typing this on a Dell 4600 RIght now. You need to look up how to set the jumpers on the internal hard disk ( 8GB) to SLAVE MODE, and set the 80GB to Master.
Remove the 8GB from the metal bracket, and put the 80GB in its place. Put the 8GB beside it. Plug the 80GB into the end of the IDE cable, and the 8GB into the middle. When you boot, you can hit F2 to go into the bios, and change the boot order from HD0 to HD1 and you can boot from your 8GB.

Now, If you want to boot from the 80GB, ( which I would ) you need an operating system.

Get your Disk labeled Reinstallation CD, Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Including Service Pack 1, and boot from it. Then format the 80GB, and install the OS There.. You will need your WIndows XP Home Key. ( you can either get it off the case or use Magic Jelly Bean Key finder to get it off your 8GB. Get the key and write it down. ITS IMPORTANT ).

Then you can change your boot order in BIOS, back to HD0, and boot from your fresh copy of XP Home.

If your interested in having a close to seamless experence as possible, you might want to invest in a copy of Partition Magic Pro. It can copy both the restore partition, ( the first 600MB of your 8gb disk ) and the primary partition of the 8gb, and resize the 8gbs primary partion on the 80gb to 80gb. ( YEA! ).

If you have *any* *any* lack of understanding please clarify

PC see's Maxtor but I can not.

Hi,

It is definitely possible you accidentally deleted the partition. If you already know how to open the drives properties sheet, do so, then click on the volumes tab and click the populate button. This will solve a few minor setup issues. If this doesn't work then it is likely that either the partition is gone/damaged. Try using disk management to look at the drive. If the partition shows up you may simply need to assign a drive letter. If it doesn't then chances are the partition is gone and will require assistance to recover.

Try these and let me know how you make out. If you have found that the partition is gone and need a pro comment back with your country/state/city and I will recommend one for you.

It seems to me that when the drive was partitioned, the whole thing was not partitioned. If using Windows XP you can go under the Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management and then Disk Management. You should be able to see the drive and if any unpartitioned space is available.

try using a partitioning utility like gparted, pmagic, partition magic etc. this will tell you whether your drive is full, partitioned, how much is used and if the partition takes up the full disk. also, try doing scandisk on it to see if there are errors and to get the errors fixed

Did you select to make the boot partition active? Most of the drive copy/image/partition programs have an option for this.
