Boot problem I just in stalled an maxtor ata 250 gig in my dell dimension 4400. I used partition magic to copy partitions to this drive. It is connected via cable select. When I hook it up to replace my old drive it will not boot. I have a dual boot XP2 system and use boot magic which doesn't  recognise it as bootable. Can you help me? Thanks. Terry

Re: Boot problem

You have to set the master boot record to bootable.. I dont know how you would do this in windows, maybe you can do it with grub or something.. or maybe just search google for restoring master boot record(mbr).

SOURCE: booting problem

I'm thinking the boot sector or master boot record was not written to the new disk or is corrupted.

Try running the recovery console from the installation CD and take a look at FIXBOOT and FIXMBR

My Maxtor Athena 20GB hard disk is in error

delete the entire partition and do a quick format....
then do partition according to your requirement and try formatting...
if it still says error, then use any disk formatting utility like partition magic and try one more time....
still problem then you should take it back for replacement if it comes under warranty period....

PC see's Maxtor but I can not.

It is definitely possible you accidentally deleted the partition. If you already know how to open the drives properties sheet, do so, then click on the volumes tab and click the populate button. This will solve a few minor setup issues. If this doesn't work then it is likely that either the partition is gone/damaged. Try using disk management to look at the drive. If the partition shows up you may simply need to assign a drive letter. If it doesn't then chances are the partition is gone and will require assistance to recover.

Try these and let me know how you make out. If you have found that the partition is gone and need a pro comment back with your country/state/city and I will recommend one for you.

I just purchased a 320 gig hard drive and when i set a partition it only shows 132 gig

Use the WD data life guard disc to partition the drive. Put the disc in, reboot the computer, and run data life guard. A screen comes up and asks if your system can recognize a partition greater than 137 gb. If your system can read larger than 137, then use the option to format one large partition.

Some OS cannot read larger than 137gb. Also some Bios have the same problem.

It seems to me that when the drive was partitioned, the whole thing was not partitioned. If using Windows XP you can go under the Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management and then Disk Management. You should be able to see the drive and if any unpartitioned space is available.
