Remove the whole top of valve, put on the ground and push down with your feet, then drive out the pin in the handle, the whole thing will come apart

SOURCE: problems with hayward vari flow valve.

It sounds like you might just need to replace your valve. They are fairly inexpensive. Try contacting this company. They will be able to tell you exactly what you need to do (free advice) and will have the parts necessary if you do need to buy a new pool filter or new parts.

Backyard City Pools 888-751-0101 or www.backyardcity.com

Just let them know that you need to speak with the person in charge of pools. He will be able to help.

Be sure it is not plumbed backwards and be sure you got a sand valve as a DE plumbs the other way.

If you remove the top of the valve you will see a spider gasket that has pulled out of place. remove this and clean and dry throughly. Add a small amount of silicone sealer to the bottom of a new one and install in groves then replace top of valve and let sit for a couple of hours. That should fix. If not you will need to replace the top half of the valve also.

Hayward vari flo valve

Does it filter? Does the pump have full prime? I'm not clear about how when the valve is put in the backwash position nothing happens.

When my filter is in the filter position i am losing a little bit of water coming out of the waste and backwash pipe

The gasket or o-rings on your backwash valve are leaking. Bring any part of your valve to a pool store and they will know the parts you need.

I have a hayward pump that is about 5 months old and we vaccuumed the bottom of the pool and backwashed it and now it is leakingout the waste/backwash pipe even when it is on filter mode and a little bit...

Do you have a multiport valve or a push pull valve?

Multiport should only be moved in a clockwise direction and never backward. You may want to take off the top and check the seal.

Push pull ... take the valve apart and check the "O" rings.

Sand in my waste water

O-rings or gasket are replaced to stop leaks, so that wouldn't have helped you.

It could be one of two things; either the white PCV-like pipe in the filter tank is cracked OR some of the laterals at the very bottom of the tank, under the sand, has melted. A whole new underdrain assembly is usually $70.

What do i do with the waste line port on the multiport valve on a hayward filter. do i attach a fitting to stop air

No. That port is there for when you backwash or pump to waste. You normally put a hose adapter there that allows for a collapsable backwash line to be attached when ready to backwash the filter. If it is leaking water there when the valve is set to something other than waste or backwash yuou need to replace the internal gasket in the valve.

With filter set on "FILTER" water is escaping out backwash port contiualy lowering pool water level.

Your question was posted under "Pond and Water Garden Pumps", but I assume you are really asking about a swimming pool filter. Unscrew the control valve from the valve body and check the condition of the O-ring. If it is nicked, torn, or worn allowing water to flow past the valve, buy a replacement at your local hardware store or swimming pool supply. Pop the old one off, and put the new one in the track where the old one was. If it doesn't want to stretch to fit, put the new seal in HOT water for a few minutes and try again. Lubricating the O-ring with some Vaseline or other brand petroleum jelly will make operating the valve easier and cut down on wear of the new seal.
