I have had vw side steps fitted by my vw dealer but the rear of the steps will not support any weight and have dropped by at least 2" on both sides .Any advice please

normally the control unit is in the boot area in one of the side panels.
i would get a diagnostic check carried out first to make sure its not something else.

Check grounding on the fixture. Usually the fixture only gets the 12v+ from switch. The 12v- comes from the fixtures mounting or it has a black wire that comes off of fixture and goes to ground.
I have the same whistle sound, too.. since last year... just after warranty period. I've notice it comes from the clutch of the compressor that helps the engine until 3000 rpm when the turbo goes into the action. to replicate the sound, check left side of the engine, put someone to push the clutch pedal and then press on the accelerator. Check with VW if there is a solution, although I think you will run thousands of miles and no damage because of that.
even if they dont they should clean up there mess i would change dealers they dont seem to care about the small stuff if thats true what do you think there missing else where
