You are correct in the assumption that the power assist is the problem. The brake booster has either failed completely or has a broken vacuum line. Please check that the booster lines are intact and if so, get yourself a new booster.

You should have a hydraulic brake booster. a common failure item on fords and also would cause your symptom. the burning smell, I would go back and recheck all the brakes. Maybe a problem with the e-brakes, or an issue with the front or rear calipers. Possibly a damaged steel or high pressure brake line. Good luck.

SOURCE: 1997 FORD F250 XLT 4WD - Had a hard brake pedal with hardly any brakes while standing on them. Replaced booster and wheel cylinders at same time now the pedal is mushy and no brakes.

They need to be bleed again all four wheels but your vacuum pump may be bad since diesels don't have vacuum then have to have a pump, check that the booster one way check valve is good if you can blow thew it both ways it's bad, to bleed start from the wheel farthest away from the master cylinder pump the brakes 5 times and hold down then open the bleed valve keep doing this until you get clear fluid out of each wheel once you have done that if it is still mushy and you know you have vacuum re bleed with engine running this will help push more out with power assist. most like the hard brake pedal had to do with no vacuum check out the pump. You may also have to reset the 2 way check valve if you need help with this let me know.

to test your brake assist is working. stop the motor. Press w few times the brakes, till the pedal feels sturdy. Then while pressing the pedal down firmly, start the engine. When you feel the pedal going down, like feeling "soft" you know the brake assist works. If nothing changes it is defect.

I have a Lexus RX300 1999 model and have this recent problem. engine running normally but gear gets stuck in Parking mode and won't shift. had to depress the emergency button on the gear shift and

Hi there,

Some automatic vehicles rely on the brake switch (mounted on brake pedal) to be activated by depressing brake pedal. This signal then operates a relay and switch, to release the gear lever.

Firstly, I would check the brake pedal switch (are your brake lights working?).

If brake switch is confirmed OK, then inspect the relay (and related circuit components) of the gear release switch.

How to reset the oil message

Turn the ignition on (so dash lights come on) and stomp the gas pedal to the floor and release. Do this 3 times in 5 seconds leaving the ignition on. Wait 30 seconds, or until the message finishes flashing, then turn the ignition off. All set and don't stomp too hard!

My break pedal I have to pump twice to stop, I checked the pad and shoes, they are in good condition. what I don't know is how to set the E break?.

When you say "E" I am guessing you mean an emergency brake. The parking brake can be used for that reason but not designed to do this but only in an emergency. below I gave you the instructions on how your parking brake works. I hope this helps and is what you're looking for and by the way it sounds as if you need to replace your master cylinder. Good luck.

The brake light switch on these trucks was a poor design. Its mounted on the brake pedal. Look under there and bend the bracket that holds the brake light switch slightly and things will start working again. When these were new we used to just grab the brake pedal and pull it toward the drivers seat really hard and let go. This fixed your problem 99% of the time.

Emergency brake locked after pull release handle

handbrake jammed on somewhere ,could be front cable ,because the rear cable is pulled by the compensator so if it was the rear one then i would expect only one cable siezed and that is normally the kerbside one.

Brakes won't bleed on ford windstar 2003.

Sounds to me like the proportioning valve might be tripped. Try opening the bleeder screws at all wheels and have an assistant stomp on the brake pedal (all the way to the floor) and hold the pedal down while you close all the bleeder screws. Continue with normal bleeding procedures. Stomping the pedal with all bleeders open equalizes the pressures and resets the proportioning valve, allowing the fluid to flow to all four wheels again.
