My IPOD shuffle worked fine until the battery power was gone. When I plugged it into a USB port, it didn't charge. I've tried the shuffle on multiple computers and multiple USB ports and it isn't recognized on any of them; either in Windows or in ITunes on my primary computer. As mentioned by the other poster, it won't even recharge so not only can't I add tunes, I can't even listen to what I have. I've been on the net for an hour and can't find anyone who's solved this problem...

I can't download any music into my shuffle. When the device is connected it shows ipod(E) in the upper right hand corner of the music player. It's as if it just doesn't recognize the device.

Ipod Shuffle 2nd Gen, Product Red, 2GB... 1 month old - worked perfectly until today. While jogging the music just stopped, I assume the battery went completely dead since it's been a few days since I've plugged it into my Dell computer which is 2 months old. Shuffle woudln't turn on and no lights whatsoever. Got home, plugged into the computer and nothing. No lights, no connection, not showing up in Windows or Itunes. Just dead, no lights blinking or constant or obvious charging. After about 2 hours the computer did pick it up for about 3 seconds and then dumped it. Then again after another hour, the computer picked it up again for about 10 sec, synced with Itunes and was dumped again. Again no lights on and not visible in Windows or Itunes. Just apparently dead on the dock. And only a month old! Guess I'll be taking it to the Apple store. Wonder if getting the wall USB charger would give it a better chance of charging from a complete dead battery state? My computer is brand new and has USB 2.0, so it SHOULD charge fine. But there's just no life to the thing. :(

I had the same problem where my shuffle just turned off as if it ran out of battery power, and when i tried to plug it in the computer it wouldnt recognise it or i would get an unknow device error. I tried many of the 5r as much as i could but didnt work. Then finally yesterday i tried something new. I pluged the ipod into the computer and left it pluged in to the usb port and i noticed that every time i would lift the ipod from the dock (not all the way) that the light would blink green one time. So what i did was i positioned the ipod back on the dock then lifted it until the green light blinked and i turned it on, and it works now, the battery is charged. However i havent tried to plug it back in the computer to see what happens but i can listen to my music now.

  • If when you put your Ipod Into the computer it blinks only an orange light THREE TIMES and a green light when you take it out you have to manually reconfigure the drive by docking and undocking the Ipod about 5-10 times or until it starts to blink constantly and your computer recognize it.

Thanks Michael Hughes for this paragraph.
It works for me, docking and undocking the ipod shuffle. rather connecting to a pc, I insist on an ac wall charger.
I undock and dock several times until a got a steady green light, I leave it alone for hours.. and finally it blinked green (continuos). My Ipod shuffle 2nd gen fixed.
My problem was a drained battery doesn't even charge, and when docked to pc / itunes(latest) unrecognized, and the blinking green and amber (three times) is irritating. When immediately undocked a green blink.
Now, its working even the songs uploaded works fine.   Thanks again Mike...

Remember these five basic suggestions when you run into a problem with your iPod. If one of the following doesn’t help, read on for solutions to specific problems.
Tip: Check Device Manager first (right-click on My Computer, choose Manage, and then select Device Manager). If no devices appear in the Windows Device Manager, go here.
Before starting, make sure your iPod is fully charged and then toggle the Hold switch on and off.
Reset, Retry, Restart, Reinstall , RestoreClick here to go through the 5 R's of iPod troubleshooting, which most of the time will solve your problem. If you're still experiencing the issue after going through each of the steps, then continue on for more suggestions. Still can't see your iPod? Several things could keep iPod from appearing in iTunes or Windows Explorer. The most likely causes are listed below—you'll find information for both USB and FireWire (IEEE 1394) iPod connections. Check each one starting from the top of the list to see if that is what's keeping iPod from appearing.
Or try restoring the ipod to factory settings.

Can you use windows media player to download music to the ipod shuffle?

Posted on Aug 10, 2008

Hello everyone my name is Michael Hughes I am a computer tech. Now I have the answer to your problems I will list off steps to get your Ipod working again.

  • If your Ipod shuffle does not blink anytime or any colors that could mean that your usb ports do not put out enough energy to support an Ipod shuffle. (you have to either update your bios, get a external usb power port that can be charged from a wall, reconfigure you usb port physically to put out more energy, change you power saving settings in the Control Panel, or buy a new laptop.)
  • You could also just check your charger to make sure it is not defected at all.
  • You should always have an external source for your laptop or desktop like a plug out let and not just internal batteries.
  • If when you put your Ipod In to charge and you get no orange light to blink on and off, you have burned the software or damaged it. so you should either throw it away, return it, or get your warranty back. (last hope is put the ipod shuffle in the hot oven (350) for about 3-5 minutes take it out and let it cool. This is only a last resort if all fails and I am not liable for any damaged products so use guide at own risk!)
  • If a orange light blinks on and off continuously that is completely normal and the Ipod is charging it is fine.
  • If your ipod is blinking on and off with an orange light, but it is not recognized by your computer this could be one of many problems as listed:
  1. You have to update your drivers on you laptop or desktop. (go to control panel and try to find system manager.)
  2. You have to update you Apple computer software like Itunes, Quick Time, and software updater frequently.
  3. Go to Windows Updates to and make sure your computer is up-to-date.
  4. Go to system manager and make sure your usb hubs are all ENABLED.
  5. If one usb port don't work try the ones in the back of the computer because they give out the most energy.
  • If your Ipod is blinking on and off and is error reported as unknown is shown follow the listed:
  1. Try the previous steps 1-5.
  2. Use Microsoft wizard to manually install it.
  3. Format the Ipod shuffle (go to Computer and left click on the Ipod disk go to format on the left click take out ipod after complete format. Reinstall Itunes even if you already have the latest version. After reinstall put the Ipod back in)
  4. Reset your Ipod turn it off for 20 seconds and try to use it.
  5. Make sure your computer meets the requirements for the use of an Ipod on a computer. (memory, harddrive space, est.)
  6. Use it on another computer to see if to see if you have a defected product.
  • If when you put your Ipod Into the computer it blinks only an orange light THREE TIMES and a green light when you take it out you have to manually reconfigure the drive by docking and undocking the Ipod about 5-10 times or until it starts to blink constantly and your computer recognize it.
If I help you and or any of my suggestion worked for you or if they did not work for you email me at with your problem or thanks and I will give you more assistance.

Hey Michael, I hope you're still following this thread... Anyway, I have a problem similar to the one you have described "put Ipod Into the computer it blinks only an orange light THREE TIMES and a green light when you take it out", although mine actually blinks twice, the second time is a very short blink, then light goes off and my computer displays a message saying it doens't recognize the driver. Out of the dock, the iPod works fine, I can listen to music, shuffle, skip, etc... I already tried changing cables, ports, and computers (both laptop and PC), no success. I tried your solution as well, but I am afraid after docking and undocking the iPod for like 20 times with no results it might not be right solution for me!!! When I check Device Manager, it shows me code 43, Windows stopped this device because it has reported problems. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks in advance, your post was the most hepful I've encountered so far. :)

It what charge so what should i do

When I turn on my ipod shuffle & hit play it blinks green and orange several times and won't play

The Apple iPod shuffle is a digital music player that contains a single indicator light that relays information about the device's battery condition, computer connection and any errors the device is having. The indicator light is capable of blinking red, green or orange as well as displaying a steady red, green or orange light. The iPod Shuffle includes a Universal Serial Bus interface and buttons on the front of the device for controlling music files.

Blinking Orange A blinking orange light indicates the iPod Shuffle is receiving an update via iTunes to the device's internal components. The update could include a patch to repair an error the player encountered once before, an update to the player's file-saving software, or a combination of security, repair and software updates. Updates are free and automatically sent directly from Apple through iTunes to your iPod shuffle before a sync process starts. Disconnecting iPod Shuffle When the player's light is blinking orange, do not unplug the device from your computer's USB port this will stop the update process and possible corrupt the device's internal hard drive. Let the update process and sync process finish before clicking "Eject" within iTunes and removing the player. Disk Use Enabled If you use your iPod Shuffle as a flash drive and not as a music player, a blinking orange light means that the device is connected to your computer and ready to accept files. The "Disk Use" enabled setting is changeable within iTunes if you decide to use your iPod Shuffle for music storage instead of file storage. When set up as a flash drive, the iPod Shuffle is assigned a drive letter by your computer's operating system and the drive lets you "drag and drop" files to the device. b> Charging If your iPod shuffle's battery is completely depleted or low on charge, connect the player to your computer immediately for charging then leave it connected to receive any updates to the device's software and internal components. Its indicator light may or may not blink orange until after it is fully charged. If the battery is low on charge or completely depleted, you may receive an error stating that the iPod is corrupt or needs restoring, close the error message and let the device fully charge.

Computer won't recognize 2 gen ipod shuffle. Can't charge. Usb port is working but message "USB Device Not Recognized" HELP

Can it charge if you plug it into the usb charger in the wall?

If it can, that means that the inside of the shuffle is ok because it's still making a connection and charging. If not, you'll need to start replacing parts. If it charges, keep reading.

I'll assume your on Windows, so right-click My Computer > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager. Find your iPod (it will be under drives or something like that) right-click it and Uninstall.

Then go to Action (I think) > Scan for new devices and it will re-discover the iPod, and re-load the drivers for it.

New ipod shuffle just flashes orange light in the dock

Hi pa86,

If the light just flashes Orange when connected it means that it is trying to sync to iTunes. This is normal. If it continues to flash for an extraordinary amount of time then there is a problem with the Shuffle. The best thing to do is reset and restore the Shuffle. Refer to page 23 of the Shuffle Manual.

All the best

IPod shuffle 1st gen. Not Recognized By PC

Try a different USB port first. Here are some other suggestions:
Connect iPod shuffle to a high-power USB port on your computer. iPod shuffle may
need to be recharged.
â Make sure you have installed the latest iTunes software from
â Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer. Make sure iPod shuffle is
firmly seated in the dock. Make sure the USB connector is oriented correctly. It can be
inserted only one way.
â iPod shuffle might need to be reset. Turn iPod shuffle off, wait five seconds, and then
turn it back on again.
â If there is no status light (or the status light is dimmed) and iPod shuffle doesn’t
appear in iTunes or the Finder, the battery may be completely discharged. Let
iPod shuffle charge for several minutes to see if it comes back to life.
â Make sure you have the required computer and software. See “If you want to doublecheck
the system requirements” on page 25.
â Try restarting your computer.
â If none of the previous suggestions solves the problem, you might need to restore
iPod software. See “Updating and Restoring iPod shuffle Software” on page 26.
â If restoring iPod shuffle doesn’t solve the problem, iPod shuffle may need to be
repaired. You can arrange for service on the iPod shuffle Service & Support website at
