I have a carrier central air conditioning system and the previous owner set the thermostats to a ''set back'' of 75 degrees and no matter what we do, it keeps going back to 75 degrees and my electric bill was huge. How can I change or clear the set backs?
The easiest way with a programmable t-stat which i assume it is, is to set the temp you want then press the hold button, otherwise if it isn't held at that temp at different times of the day the t-stat will resume its programming schedule.

Well Brian, an air conditioner creates the same temperature drop across the evaporator at any thermostat setpoint, so there is no setting that will get it really cold really fast. If your return air is 88 degrees (in a hot house where the system has been off) the supply air temp is going to be near 68 degrees..... as the a/c runs, the air changes within the structure cause a reduction in the average return air temperature and slowly drops the return to 87, then 86 then 85 etc, etc and the corresponding supply air temp continues to drop from 68 to 67 to 66 to 65 etc etc. Eventually the supply air temp after the appropriate 'air changes' within the structure will drop to 55 degrees and possibly even lower to satisfy the average room temp at 75, 74, 73 etc. to a point.
There are SOME newer a/cs that have two speed compressors that may effect the supply air temperature drop under differing load conditions, but thats a different ball of wax.
So, if you want it cold quickly you are out of luck, just leave the t-stat set at 70 degrees and pay the electric bill when it comes in.....
AC means "air conditioning." If the AC icon is showing on your thermostat it means that your air conditioning is activated and should come on when the temperature threshold you've set on the thermostat is reached.
For example, if you've set the temperature level to 78 degrees, when the house temperature goes above 78, usually by about two degrees, the air conditioner should cycle on to cool it back down to 78 degrees at which point it will then turn off.
This information should be in your air conditioning/heating system or thermostat owners manual. If you don't have the manual, you should contact your air conditioning dealer or your builder to secure a replacement. The manual is essential for proper operation and maintenance of your system.
As to your question 'will 75 cool the house?' The answer is 'yes' - if the outside temperature is low enough. Typically speaking you can expect your central AC to cool a properly insulated house to a down to a temperature of about 20-25 degrees lower than the outside temperature. For example - if the outside temp is 95 degrees. You could expect to get your house down to 70-75 degrees. If the outside temp is 110 degrees then you could only expect to get the house to 85 or 90 degrees.
So .. as you can see - your 'inside' temp will be directly affected by the 'outside' temperature.
As to the operation of central air; it is very simple.
I would suggest that you not pay 'too much attention' to what you have the thermostat set on. A comfortable temperature - is a personal thing - so - I would set it somewhere - say 72 and see how I (and others in the house) was handling that setting.
If you want it 'cooler' just 'notch' it down a degree or two - if you need it a little warmer - turn it up a degree or two. Do this "fine adjusting" till you have the temperature setting you are comfortable with.
Usually the more you can leave your thermostat alone the better off you will be from a comfort position and an electrical useage standpoint. Obviously, the higher you have your thermostat set the 'less' it will cost you on your electric bill.
How high you set the temperature is a balance you have to come to based on how comfortable you want to be - matched with how much you want to hold down the electric bill.
The thermostat is not functional, therefore its not cutting off the compressor once the room air gets cooled to the temp setting of the thermostat, also the refrigerant gas may have leaked out some but not the entire refrigerant gas(freon, CF4, etc.), keeping the compressor running contentiously to come down to the set temp..............sodeep
if you have a mercury thermostat and it is not leveled properly it will turn the temperatyure on and off by a couple of degrees
some thermostats have the capability of running the unit longer than the set temperature
i would recommend calling a local heating and air conditioning contractor and get the unit cleaned and bring up the issue then
