Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console
The problem is known as a YLOD on the PS3 or Yellow Light of Death.
Your PS3 is most probably a 60gb model as they are mostly known for
this issue. The PS3 is fitted with a very good cooling system.
Unfortunately some of the 60gb models still overheats (either the GPU
or CPU). This causes the YLOD and is very similar to the XBox' s Red
Ring of Death.
The best is to return the PS3 if still under guarantee. You can attempt to repair it yourself at own risk. There are no statistics on how long the fix lasts. Most of the YLOD consoles I repaired myself are still holding out and it seems the fix is more permanent than the Xbox 360 fix. Here is a link to the guide that must be followed and it works (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_Ic1_TY-GU) The other parts in the series you will find on the same page. There are 7 parts
After the fix a couple of things can be done to prevent future overheating:
Do not keep the PS3 in a confined space.
Keep it away from dust.
To enhance airflow, remove the cover over the HDD when switching it on.
Switch it off when not playing.
I hope this helps you.
