How do i install a operating system on a sony old sony viao 600hep with no dos and no operating system and a broken cd rom drive. only have usb.

Check out this:
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows

This gives instructions on how to download, and create a ubuntu bootable USB stick.

http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/try-ubuntu-before-you-install

This will give instructiosn on how to load and install from said USB.

You will need:
A working computer with Windows
A 2GB or larger USB stick
Internet connection

After you've made your USB stick, when booting up the computer you wish to install ubuntu on be sure you have the USB stick inserted when powering it on. When the start screen comes up press ESC to enter the BIOS or boot order. Select the USB stick from within the BIOS boot order menu, or the USB stick from the boot options menu.

Load ubuntu, install, enjoy.

Good luck!

HP Compaq 6910p overheats and shutdown

Being an Hp, I would suspect the GPU. Heat damage will make the CPU work very hard and it in turn will overheat. Unless the heatsink compound has lost its usefulness. Between the CPU and the heat sink.

How do i get to recovery mode for ubuntu?

  1. Switch on your computer.
  2. Wait until the BIOS has finished loading, or has almost finished. (During this time you will probably see a logo of your computer manufacturer.)
  3. Quickly press and hold the Shift key, which will bring up the GNU GRUB menu. (If you see the Ubuntu logo, you've missed the point where you can enter the GRUB menu.)
  4. Select the line which starts with "Advanced options".
  5. Select the line ending with "(recovery mode)", probably the second line, something like: Ubuntu GNU/Linux, with Linux 3.8.0-26-generic (recovery mode)
  6. Press Return and your machine will begin the boot process.
  7. After a few moments, your workstation should display a menu with a number of options. One of the options (you may need to scroll down to the bottom of the list) will be "Drop to root shell prompt". Press Return with this option highlighted.
  8. The root partition is mounted read-only. To mount it read/write, enter the command
    mount -o remount,rw /
  9. If you have /home, /boot, /tmp, or any other mount point on a separate partition, you can mount them with the command
mount --all (This must be done following step 8 so that /etc/mtab is writable.) Alternatively, you could try selecting "Enable networking" in step 7, though this has been found to cause the system to hang (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/friendly-recovery/+bug/981792).
NOTE 1: If you have Ubuntu Quantal (12.10) or earlier, omit step 4 (the recovery mode menu items are displayed on the top-level menu).
NOTE 2: If you reboot, there is no need to hold the Shift key in step 3. The GNU GRUB menu will continue to be displayed automatically on each boot until a normal startup of Ubuntu completes. To configure GRUB so the menu is always displayed, even after a normal startup, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/Setup.

Updating bios from ubuntu

You don't "Boot" a BIOS it means "Built In Operating System" it provides onboard instructions for the essential computer hardware, It is generally best to update the bios before you install the OS, as there can be difficulties and conflicts afterwards. You can update the BIOS and it is available on the Compaq Support site. Good luck.

I have a Compaq FP 5314 that flashes on and off at about every four seconds. It works on XP and shows everything up to the OS coming on. That is all the bios type info, but then starts flashing as above....

The problem is that UBUNTU is setting the screen-resolution to some values that your monitor does not support, e.g., 1920-by-1080, or not setting it to 60Hz.

During boot-up, your monitor uses 800-by-600, so it "initially" works, both with UBUNTU and XP.

Windows "detects" the monitor, and selects "usable" settings.

Attach a new monitor to UBUNTU, and then set the video-resolution to 1024-by-768 and to 60 Hz -- your Compaq should support those settings.

My old Toshiba Satellite 490 is even older and has much less processor power and I run XP on it just fine. In fact XP runs faster on it then 98 did.

Known Problems Compaq Presario 1200 laptops are often found with damaged power jacks. Some of these power jacks appear to have been blown in half due to some sort of short; others rip their copper traces off of the motherboard due to stress placed on the power jack. Presario 1200 laptops typically have four tiny copper rings embedded in the motherboard behind the power jack that can be used to reattach a slightly damaged power jack and repair the failing unit.
The LCD Power Inverter cable (which runs through the hinge from the base to the screen), is very susceptible to damage, given the strain of bending when closing the lid. The cable is a 6-strain ribbon variety, and therefore soldering is all but impossible.

Hello,
Borrow a USB floppy drive, copy the update on a floppy disk. You will need a floppy to update the BIOS of the old computer anyway. Reviving a defunct machine with Linux is a worthile endeavor.

Hope it helps.

AS I said to you a while ago, the Red Hat Linux is about 10 years old, at least. It will be next to impossible to get repair parts, because they were not as well organized as now. Now they are developing a consumer market and they are doing very well. I suggested to you that I can send you the Ubuntu 9,04, which was just released in the middle of this month of May, 2009.Then, if you still liked the deall, which has aprice of US $ 00.00, I was going to send you a copy of the software with instructions. I have done a great deal of R&D with various distributions of LInux. Of all these I have a list that I can share with you. All of the items below are all Linux: Linux Mandriva 2009 Spring new edition is good, Linux Ubuntu 8.10 is good, but they just released this past may the 9.04 edition. This is what I am using right now. It seems to be unsurpassed by anything else. They have the right specs, they are free, secure, unless one would like to buy a disk for US $ 1.00. Sometimes it is necessary, if the Bootloader is difficult to install, then you can spend US $ 1.00 and avoid all the headaches.
My name is Constantin (arzconst)
