Is there a substitute switch for the discontinued ut41002a-36 switch for my string trimmer?

For those looking for a source for the UT41002A-36 as a replacement for FA3-4 in the Ryobi RY41002 string trimmer I want to confirm that as of Summer 2015 - I couldn't find any seller still carrying this switch. I likewise could not find a substitute with anything approaching the same form factor. For those questioning whether it is the switch and not the motor and haven't taken time to check, I can confirm that the switch is more likely to be the problem.

Without any options other than wiring in a new external switch or some other hack, I opened the malfunctioning switch. It requires patience to handle the switch internals without having it all "fall apart" but you may notice oxidation (as I did) that can be easily addressed with a little scraping. I am certainly disappointed that I had to fool around with switch internals to keep this lawn tool working but wanted to offer this suggestion to any others who may be frustrated. The trigger switch Ryobi chose is just too fragile for a lawn tool.

I would welcome a reply from anyone who can offer me a "DYI obsession intervention" as I keep wasting too much time that would be better spent on other activities.

I have a cst1000 cordless trimmer. The recharging unit has failed. Do you sell a replacement that has the red and green lights indicating charging or charged?

Ryobi Electric string trimmer

TJ, I've had the same problem since yesterday and I found the solution (lots of googling - that's how I found your post BTW).
It turned out that the switch malfunction is a common problem.

The part number for the FA3-4 switch is:

ut41002a-36 ("switch assembly")

Available here (thru Amazon):
http://factorylawnandgarden.com/product/553902/B000PLVCX8/SWITCH_ASSEMBLY_UT41002A_36/

It's a Homelite part, which is identical to Ryobi.

Here is the manual showing it (part 6):
http://www.m-and-d.com/pdfs/ryobi_tool/RY41002.pdf

Here is the thread with the solution:

Adi
