SOURCE: remote control problems

I would love to say we can help, but the truth is, you remote needs to be replaced. One of the advantages to have the remote is that you wear out the remote, not the controls on the tv. And replacing a remote is much cheaper. You have done all you can to save this remote. You will need to replace it.

SOURCE: No video on VHS tapes playback. on a Zenith VR4257HF

Sounds like the video heads are worn and time to replace them. You can try Asti Magnetics. The part number you are looking for is "378". Sells for $55 plus shipping. A bit cheaper but quality parts. I've dealt with them in the past. You can decide if the VCR is worth it to repair.

Sony RM-Y186 remote will not work what is wrong with it?

1. don't press the buttons like a hardcore boxer :)
2. disassemble the remote control. No big deal. It has a plastic housing the buttons are on a plastic/rubber sheet. (remove batteries first)
3. clean the plastic/rubber sheet where the buttons are both on top and rear side. Take some clean petrol from the groceries next corner, and clean the black pads on the bottom of the buttons + also on the circuit sheet you'll find inside the remote control.
4. Put everything together and...

... TADAAA! It works again. :-)

good day Angel i am Falco the problem you have might be due to dirty heads on the Drum unit, I would first try a head cleaning tape, there are 2 types of head cleaning tapes one looks like a typical video casset type tape and the other is like a wight frizzy type tape that you apply a cleaning liquid to for a deep cleaning the first one is used for preventative maintenance, try the 2nd type first, it may take several times to restore your video note allow time for the liquid to dry up before trying a tape at least several min`+ , if after this procedure the problem has not gotten better than you might have an electronic fault and might not be worth perusing further, If however this made some improvement than you are on the right track and might require a better cleaning procedures, if so contact me further and i will step you through the procedure.

best of luck and regards Falco

Panasonic remote does not work

First check that the battery contacts on the unit are clean and can make a good contact with those batteries. If that doesn't solve the problem, maybe it's not the remote? VCR's have a remote sensor, these can and do go faulty. The only way to be certain is to buy a cheap universal remote. If that can switch it on the your Panasonic remote is faulty. If it can't the remote sensor is faulty.

Infrared on all the time sony remote

Hi Robert,
Most of these remotes are carbon pattern type closed switches. If you cleaned the PCB with other than a real pure solution like rubbing alcohol the pad may still be shorted continuously. The real problem is that if the button were sticking that usually mean there was a contaminant inside the remote which could be a drink or other spill. All that needs to be cleaned out. I use denatured alcohol but I do not scrub the carbon traces as they can be removed if not careful. A light cleaning with Windex might help as drinks are water based not alcohol based. I could take a look at the remote if you want. I repaired a number of them when I was Sony authorized and working at other places as a Chief Engineer. People seem to bring me things to repair- it is still going on but most cassette decks and Open Reel decks now.
E mail me at if you need help.

Remote for Sony vcr works intermittently.

Sounds like the connections inside the remote are damaged and might need soldering. Check the connections around where the battery terminals are carefully. Has a battery leaked in the remote?

Remote On/Off button does not wotk

There is line on all sides of remote that has locks that hold upper and lower cabinet of remote.
Take out batteries, insert any plastic card (credit card or ATM card etc) or flat head screw driver and turn it to release lock, move that card forward to release all locks and take off lower cabinet then circuit board.
Clean carbon coated switches on other side of circuit board with cotton bud dipped in alcohol etc, let it dry for some time and put things back in, put batteries and check it.
Below image will give you an idea about how to apart remote control.

Reset/Cancel button no longer works on remote

Its pretty easy to clean the inside of a remote control. Its a bit hard to open it, its mostly clip usually sometimes with a few screw, usually in the battery door if there is. Use glasse flat screwdriver to pry and split in two the box... Just lil patience, pry here and there and youll soon find the way to do it. After its open, you have to clean the rubber pad with hot water and soap and scrub it gently with a cloth. Clean the electronic side with rubbing alcohol and cloth, rub the black carbon contact a bit more... Good luck!

Don't know whether the keys stick because they're dirty or just worn out -- GE VHS Remote. Can I clean them?

You can get a tuner cleaner and lubricator spray and use it on the remote. Be sure and take out the batteries first and then let the spray soak in. Wipe off the excess and let the remoter sit for about 30 min. and then put the batteries back in. This should fix your problem.

Remote stops working

Your remote is going bad and the only solution is to buy another one or buy a universal but it will only let you use the basic functions like play, rew,ff , stop and on time recording, I don think it will let you program for recording it or use the menu,a new remote will cost almost as much as a new VCR.The universal is a very inexpensive option.
