Do you have the proper Sony drivers for it? Get them all at the Sony website. Reinstall like this: Use a disk wiping tool to clean the entire Hard drive before installing anything on it again Wipe drive is a good one to use. After the disk is totally cleaned, Install windows xp. You can use the quick format for the drive when windows ask to format if you like. Then follow all of the windows prompts to install the OS. After its finished installing and you get the desktop up don't install all the drivers you downloaded from the Sony site, if you do it will mess things up! Install ONLY the missing ones. Go to Start, right click on my computer, select manage. Then click on device manager, open each menu and see which drivers are still missing (look for yellow question marks) install only the missing drivers. Many times you download 20 drivers but you may only use 4 or 5. After all are installed reboot and it should work fine. NOTE: Sony drivers like all other ones are not identified as to their use, just given weird numbers. When downloading them they are listed under each category like audio, mouse, etc, but after you get them you still won't know which one does what. I download one at a time then rename it adding the function to the last part of the name so I know what its for and I can easily get the driver I need, when I need it.
SOURCE: Install Windows XP without a CD drive
You'll need to assign the CD drive (which should show up as USB devicein BIOS or setup) as first boot device, if capable on your model/Computer. After you press power button, you should see a menu or dialog that shows something like 'press F2' or 'Delete' to enter setup. Once in setup, you should navigate thru until you find boot options or something of that nature. Select 'Boot from CD' or ' USB Device'. You should now insert your XP CD into the drive, close the tray, then choose 'Save'. It should now let you boot from the XP CD. At the first screen, you should select 'R' for repair console. It will then ask you to select an installation, type a '1' and then press the 'Enter' key. Next line will ask you to type an Administrator password. If you have one, type it, then press Enter. If no password, just tap the Enter key. Now, at the prompt, type CHKDSK C: /r as in (C: a space /r). then tap the Enter. It shoild now attempt to repair your Windows 2000 installation. When it finishes, reboot, go back into Setup and change first boot device to hard drive. Select Save and reboot LT. Have fun!

SOURCE: Sony Vaio wont boot
Hm, maybe your bios battery is dead. Try to buy a new one, and boot than boot it. A bios battery is usually under the keyboard.

Go into the BIOS of laptp and change the boot order like

then save changes.exit
SOURCE: I can't boot up the Vista install on a Sony Vaio VGN-NR160E
go to your BIOS Setup, see to it that there is a Hard Disk Boot Priority, maybe you didn't put it there.
