Re: masterlink won't turn on

Hi. You may have a corrupt boot file or something. When you say "it won't turn on..", do you mean there is no power up at all? Or Just trouble booting?

I had a problem with my one (v2.0) once, where it wouldn't start or boot - it would just hang at the initial 'welcome' screen.. and then not do anything. The problem was traced to a corrupt sector on the drive (the initialising boot sector).

My local Alesis repair agent (Numark Alesis UK, London) told me that it would be beneficial to have a new drive in this case - to make sure there aren't any critical errors on the disk surface - and for them to ghost all my existing Playlists and data over to the new drive. They installed the latest boot and software and away I went - all fixed.

The other thing, in your case, is that if you bumped it, you could have knocked the read-write heads out of sink - in which case your data and disk could be perfectly alright. It may mean that the unit just needs to be re-calibrated.

If there is no power-up at all then it could be electronic components that have gone. There is two solenoids installed, one at initial power-up stage to protect from spikes and surges whilst unit is switched off - and another one (which you hear when addressing the current Edit Mode HD head (playing or recording). The latter solenoid is there to protect the disk surface from unwanted artifacts whilst spinning - due to the Masterlink HD spinning all the time whilst in Edit Mode.

Hope this helps.

Recording levels are low

There's no record level adjustment on the Masterlink. Increase the output level of your mixer, or add a variable level preamplifier between the mixer and the Masterlink.

Or, use the level adjustment on the Masterlink once the recording has been done, and before you write it to CD, either with level control or DSP normalisation

When sending either analog or digital sound from my presonus VSL I am not getting any sound to the alesis masterlink. Need some advise please.

The Alesis needs to be in record standby to show any inputs as a signal on the VU meters. Press Record for standby, and press Play to start recording.

You need to be in a playlist, on a track in a playlist, in order to enter Record Standby

I cant make recordings on my masterlink every time a record a few songs and try to burn a red book cd from the hard drive it says songs less than 5 seconds

Look at all the tracks in the playlist that you're trying to burn to CD - is there a track that you've perhaps forgotten about still in the playlist, one of less than 5 seconds?
When you press Create CD, you're telling the Alesis to create a CD from the WHOLE of the current playlist, not just the track you recorded most recently ...

I bought an Alesis Masterlink ML 9600 for my church but have come to realize that its operation manual is not the best written thing I've ever read. I have it connected for analog input from my audio...

Have you thought the posibillity that the track is too short so there is plenty of remaing "time"to write to the disk? Try putting some more tracks in the recording line. Don't forget that the mean time for recording on audio cd is about 74 minutes (or 99 tracks, whatever comes first).

Try this and in case of a problem or clarification, don't hesitate to post.

I tried the "pressing play/pause and record simultaneously" during power
up, and it worked.....dunno for how long. The unit still makes strange
noises occasionally and doesn't seem completely healthy, but it's up
and I'm copying files that I want to save. We'll see.
