Question about Sony VAIO VGN-FS980 Notebook

1 Answer

Vaio VGN-FS980 My laptop was recently displaying the following error window:Windows System Error -- There is an IP address conflict. I tried to restart the laptop and had to do a hard shutdown in order for the laptop to power down. When I tried to power the laptop on again it displayed the 'Vaio' logo and sound then a flashing cursor on the top left and then nothing. It does this every time now. I am able to get into the bios screen but not sure what to do from there. I reset to defaults to no avail. I've read it could be a memory problem? The bios shows 1GB of memory which is what I have. Also, I removed one of the two 512MB memory cards with the unit off. When powered back on the bios did show 512MB accurately. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I would appreciate the the steps for checking the harddrive. Thanks. I will get the brandname of the harddrive this evening and will try the memory cards individually on boot.

I tried to boot first one memory card removed and then the other. No difference. It is booting from the harddrive, the network boot is disabled. I'm not sure it was booting to the 'last known configuration'. I didn't see where to verify this.

    My Harddrive info is:

The harddrive was OK. I did not have the recovery disks. After searching on Sony esupport they describe a system recovery function already partitioned on the harddrive which can be accessed by hitting F10 on power up if the OS does not start.

I was able to get to this 'Restore C: Drive' window by hitting F10. However, before running this, I thought I'd try to salvage my data on the harddrive. I bought an IDE harddrive enclosure, succesfully removed the Vaio harddrive and backed up my pertinent data to another PC.

After replacing the Vaio harddrive I powered up the unit and this time after the VAIO display screen I was given the option to 'boot in safe mode, boot to last config, etc...' I never had this option before. I booted in safe mode and then restarted the laptop properly and everything has been running fine. I have run several antivirus scans since then so far not finding more than several cookies.

I am glad my laptop is functioning again, but leery of the fix being just re-seating the harddrive. I plan to make a full set of recovery disks as my first task. Any other suggestions going forward?

It you removed the 1- 512 memory did you go to only the bois or did you try to let it boot? if you did not try it with the first stick of memory in and see if it works, if it does not put that stick back in and remove the second one. just because it shows the memory does not mean the memory is bad.

let it boot to last known configuration, if that does not work make sure that it is set to boot to harddrive and not to CDROM or network card. in the bios. if all of that is correct the next step would be too check the harddrive. if you need steps for checking the harddrive let me know, also if you could provide the name of the brand name of the harddrive.

click on one of the free download from and save to desktop

once downloaded click on the ubcd411.exe to create the .ISO image (select to place on desktop.)

you will need a cd burner and program such as Roxio. For roxio I click on copy and disc and select burn image and point it to the .ISO image and burn to cd. This will turn the .ISO image into a bootable cd.

You can then put it into your laptop and have it boot to CD

When Ultimate boot CD comes up click ok to start it.

You will see Diagnostic tools click on this then you will see tools for fujitsu

Click on that and run short test if no error you may want to try extended test (could take hours for this one)

If the hardrive passes testing. I would start thinking Virus, at this point I would reinstall the OS ( if you have data you need you can overlay, but if it is a virus I would reformat and install fresh.

When you attached the laptop harddrive to the other computer to copy data did it do a force harddrive check? if so it may have repaired the boot sector that may have corrupted on the force shutdown. ( I have had serveral drive repair that way) What I am wondering is what caused the lockup, the IP conflict should have not caused that, I would feel safe using the harddrive since it check out find. and I word also keep the important info on a backup always just to be save. If you have the ip conflict again I would check your router (if it is assigning IP's) or if you are setting the IP make sure you do not have 2 the same. If I noticed Windows still not acting right. I would formated and restore the system at that point.

Windows system error: "an IP address conflict wit...

This error indicates that you have two devices on your network that have the same ip address assigned to them.

If you have have ip addresses manually assigned to your network devices you can open a command prompt and enter IPCONFIG, this will tell you what the ip address is of the device that is giving you the error. This ip address is assigned to another device on your network.

You can either change the ip address of the device you are receiving the error from or find the device with the same ip address and change that one.

Alternatively, if you have a router that that has DHCP enabled you can change the properties on your network adapters to obtain the ip address automatically by going to Network Connections, right click on LAN connection and click properties.
