The best thing to do is just take it to the technician,or the place you purchased it from. Do not try to fix it your self cos out of curiosity it would damage it further, unless you are a technician ofcourse. The problem you mentioned just needs a replacement of the USB slot which can be done by the technicians easily.

For most USB external HDD they usually are just HDD enclosures. If you are lucky you may be able to just open the case up and transfer te HDD into another HDD enclosure. Unforunaly I am not able to find mutch information about your drive so I dont know if you can do that or not. Other then that if your data ius very important that you can not replace and will cost thousands or millions or just irreplaceable sentmental value then I would recommend a backup data specilist. Drivesavers is what Sony use and recommend to their customers but very pricy.

If both your Dell and the hard drive have USB ports you may be able to download directly. Other wise you may purchase an external drive and load the data to that. The external drive almost certainly will connect by USB.

Transferring files via external hard drive to new computer

You just need to connect the external hard drive to the new computer. Once it has connected and Windows recognizes the drive it should pop-up with the window asking what you would like to do (select the option to View Files). Also at this time open the folder on the new computer that you want to store the back-up files in. Make the external hard drive folder and the new computer folder sit side-by-side. Then while holding down the CTRL button on the keyboard click each file you want to move. When you are done selecting them - right click on any of the file selected and on the pop-up menu select "copy". Now go to the folder on the external drive and right click the mouse again and from the pop-up menu select "paste". This will just copy the file, that way you can keep the files on 2 different hard drives in case something happen to 1 of them.

Can i transfer information to a mac

If the external hard drive has been formatted on a PC in NTFS file format then the MAC cannot read data off this hard drive.
The FIX..
Connect the USB external hard drive to a Windows computer and copy your data off this hard drive to the computer.
Then format the external hard drive in FAT32 file format. (the MAC can read and write to data to and from a Windows PC)
Now copy the your data from the computer back onto the external hard drive.
Now you can connect the external hard drive to the MAC and download your data to the MAC.

Iintend to change my sata hard drive to a SSD hard drive. How do I format before change

When you install Windows on your new SSD hard drive you can then transfer data from your old hard drive using an USB hard drive adapter or install the old hard drive into an USB hard drive adapter case and use it as an USB external hard drive after you have transferred your data to your laptop.
When you connect the USB hard drive adapter to the laptop, the laptop will see it as an external storage device, you can then open the various folders anf files and copy them to your new hard disk.

You are using the correct connection, the external power supply is powering the drive, so the USB cable is just handling data. I believe the message may be telling you that you will get faster performance using a USB 2.0 connection, it is probably sensing that your computer's USB port is USB 1.1.

My computer dosen't turn on. How can I transfer the data from the hard drive to an external hard drive

Open the computer and remove the hard drive install it into another computer as a slave drive and read from it. If yo don`t know how to do that then just take the drive to a computer parts store and purchase the necessary cables so that you can attach it to your present computer USB port or have them transfer the files for you for a small fee.
