I just bought a clarion MAX385VD dvd player and havent installed it yet due to this "parking brake ground wire". do you need a toggle switch hooked up to ground to allow it to play or can you just hook it straight up to ground 24/7 and it not hurt the head unit??

Re: park brake switch
If you have the old firmware then all you need to do is ground the parking brake wire..
if you have the new firmware(just bought the system) a toggle switch is involved:
1 - connect e-brake wire from dvd unit to the switch
2 - connect a ground wire from switch to the unit chassis(any good metal grounding surface will do)
3 - pop in a dvd, toggle the switch back and forth 2 or 3 times depending on what wire you placed where...and voilaa!! your dvd system should work in motion!!

The most common way to solve this is to ground the E Brake wire and the deck thinks the E Brake is always on. if that fails you may have a somewhat smarter deck and may have to go to plan B.
This is a common solution to bypass the e-brake screen,
1st you will need to purchase a 12 volt or above Momentary Push Button/(Toggle)switch (about $5 Radio Shack)
2nd Using the Diagonal Pliers adjust the length of the Radio's Emergency Brake Wire to your desire. Make sure you have enough wire so you can mount it where you can easily access it like beneath your steering wheel/ on the Dash Board.
3rd Connect one end to the emergency brake wire from the radio and then connect the other wire from the switch to a ground to your car. You can use the same ground connection that you used for the radio and it will be fine. Make sure you wrap up the wires using the Electrical Tape to prevent shorts.
4th (Using Button Switch) When you are ready to use the DVD player insert DVD and after a few seconds the screen will turn blue and the message to "Set the emergency brake" will come on. Now just press the button (4x Times)for one second and release it. On The fourth time the screen takes about 6 second to display the video.
5th (Using Toggle Switch) When you are ready to use the DVD player insert DVD and after a few seconds the screen will turn blue and the message to "Set the emergency brake" will come on. Now just flip the switch on and off (4x Times). On The fourth time the screen takes about 6 second to display the video.
Find the wire for the parking brake... Get a (interrupter) toggle switch. Ground one side of the switch to a grounding point in the vehicle close to where you are gonna have it. Hook the wire for the dvd up to the other side of switch....When you want to watch dvd, flip toggle switch...
disconnect from power for 30 seconds and you will need to disable the park brake shut off buy grounding the brake wire for 2 seconds then off .. you will have to do this everytime you want to drive with this system .. i have seen people put a toggle switch inline with the brake wire and click it on and off to make the stereo work ... i hope that helps .. and remember in most citys its illegal to drive with a monitor in the front of the automobile
