Question about Frigidaire FRT8B5EW 30" 18.2 Cu. Ft. Top Mount Refrigerator w/ 2 Clear Crispers, 2 Sliding Wire Shel...

1 Answer

The air vent between my freezer compartment and fresh food compartment below is frozen over and as a result, the fresh foo d compartment gets too warm. I have a Frigidaire refrigerator, model FRT8B5EWA. The freezer temp setting is set in the middle and the fresh food compartment is set at 6. Setting it warmer or colder doesn't seem to help. What would make it freeze up like that abd how do I fix/prevent it.

You have a blockage in the drain tube, remove panel back of freezer..you will see ice build up...melt ice with hair dryer/heat gun...you will see a pan below evaporator...melt ice in pan...dry water up in pan with paper towel...now you should see a hole in pan that leads to drain tube...pour some hot water in pan..wait a couple minutes..mop up water and repeat this step 2-3 times....once you have done this find some flexible curatain wire or electrical wire..poke down the hole until you see the water drain..now it is clear..put back panel back and you are good to go. the reason you see water in the fridge is because the water has been leaking down the vent instead of the drain hole...If you need any further assistance please feel free to comment again. good luck!

Why is my kenmore freezer cold, but refrigerator not even when set at highest temp?

Hello Donna;

My name is peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

You have not provided your unit model number, which is located in your fresh food section on a label, on the side wall near the top.

You only have one cooling source, and that is your freezer. Your freezer feeds your fresh food section. This is through a direct air vent.

Reach into your fresh food section where the air vent from the freezer goes into the fresh food section. Do you feel cool air? Probably not.

So, either the air vent is frozen up with ice which you can clear with a hair dryer, or you have a automatic air vent motor/ sensor assembly that is bad.

Give me more information and I will help you.

Side-by-Side: Refrigerator will not maintain temp below 50 Deg. Freezer works fine - where is the problem? Model Number MSD2757AE

Your problem may be with:

* the "damper control assembly", which is located in the upper left side of the fresh food compartment. This control regulates the amount of cold air originating from the freezer compartment that enters the fresh food compartment.
* there may be an issue with the "fresh food temperature control assembly"

Check the temperature settings in the fresh food compartment (should be located up front). I recommend the "one-half way mark" for both freezer and fresh food compartments.

Contact an appliance service company.

Fruits & Veggies are freezing in both lower frig compartments

Good day,
This problem appears in spades this time of year, every year.
The problem becomes more severe when the temperatures in the house cools down and is made even worse if the usage of the machine becomes lighter.

It occurs when the machine is off, not on.
There is an open vent, near the bottom, between the freezer compartment and the fresh food compartment. This opening or vent is necessary when the machine is running, so that the air pumped into the top of the fresh food section, can return to the freezer compartment. This is by design.
Now,
When the machine is off, the zero degree air from the freezer compartment. can drift into the fresh food compartmnet and drop the temps near the bottom to below freezing.
Off time increases substantialy at this time of year.
Some have even recommended turning the controls colder to offset the problem, but I've no proof it works well, or even a little.
SXS and top freezer models experience it more than bottom freezer models.

Easiest way to thaw out a possible frozen water reservoir in my GE side by side fridge?

Hair dryer is the easiest way to thaw. To find cause: Remove lower grill and disconnect the water line going through the freezer2_bing.gif door hinge. Usually it is a push lock fitting, which requires you to push the ring2_bing.gif on the end of the fitting toward the center of the fitting while pulling (not hard) on the plastic tube. Now place a pan under the separated plastic hose and try the water dispenser. If water comes out, your problem is a frozen water line in the freezer door. A warmer freezer temp may help, or you can order and install a WR49X10173 water tube heater2_bing.gif. (the heater may take 24 hours to thaw the line, but I have used it successfully several times. Cost about $50) If no water comes out the separated tube when you try to dispense water, reconnect the tube at the hinge by pushing the plastic line back into the fitting. Now, at the back of the refrig., disconnect the water line going from the water valve to the fresh foods compartment. Try to dispense water. No water at valve outlet = bad valve. Water dispensed from valve now = frozen water filter2_bing.gif or water line at back bottom of fresh foods compartment. (make sure you disconnect the right tube. If in doubt, disconnect them both, just get them back correctly so your icemaker continues to work) Send me additional comments if needed. Don't rate before you try all the steps.

If water filter or water line/ reservoir is frozen, thaw with a hair dryer. If reservoir is frozen, check to make sure there is no frost on back wall of inside freezer, preventing normal air flow, allowing cold air to enter fresh foods compartment through return air vent at lower back of fresh foods compartment, resulting in freezing of water line / reservoir and possibly food in bottom bin.

The fridge is not cooling the food and especially dinks .the cooling setting is on max

Good day,
General problems.
1. The coil in the freezer is frosted up, preventing air from being
sent to the fresh food compartment. (defrost system not working).
Three parts. Defrost control, defrost thermostat, main defrost heater.
2. The fan motor in the freezer is not working, or working properly. Same results as #1.
3. The damper control that vents air from the freezer to the fresh food compartment is not opening (pneumatic style).
4. Lights stay on when the door is closed.

Best we can do without a make and model number.

My refrigerator is running but my lower portion is not cooling. The freezer part is plenty cold and keeping my frozen foods frozen. Why would the lower part of the fridge not cool?

There is a panel, or door if you will, that separates the freezer and fresh food compartments. The freezer temp control determines how much cold air is allowed to escape into the fresh food compartment by opening or closing this panel.

If the panel is restricted from moving (stuck closed, for example), the freezer will get VERY cold while the fresh food compartment will be warm.

Try thoroughly defrosting the refrigerator. Possibly an accumulation of ice is preventing the panel from moving and/or is restricting air flow from the freezer to the fresh food compartment. It's a free fix and may solve your problem altogether.

If that doesn't help, or helps only temporarily, you may have a problem with panel itself or the linkage that connects it to the control mechanism. Unless you're skilled in appliance repair, checking and repairing these components will require a service technician to check and repair these components.

Hope this was helpful. Good Luck.

Bottom of fridge not cooling

The fresh food compartment is cooled by air being blown from the freezer compartment into the fresh food compartment. Something is restricting that air flow which causes your fresh food compartment to stay warm.

Refrig not cooling

Either the fan that blows cold air from the freezer compartment to the fresh food compartment is burned out or the door/flap that seperates the compartments is stuck or the linkage connecting it to the fresh food temperature dial is stuck or broken.

The evaporator coils are in the freezer compartment and air is blown from the freezer compartment to cool the fresh food compartment. For some reason, air is not moving to fresh food compartment.

If the fan is running, it could be something as simple as Ice blocking to door between the freezer and fresh food compartment. I know modern refrigerators are self-defrosting, but that's only the evaporator coils, which are defrosted by a timer and a heater.

Ice can form on passageways inside the refrigerator, like the exit of the ice maker and in this case, on the door and 'tunnel' between the freezer and fresh food compartment. It's free, and doesn't take a lot of time, so try completely defrosting the unit before doing anything else.

BE SURE to keep the doors open, as odors can form as particles of food are allowed to defrost that may have been frozen in an ice pack for months or even years. Clean the interior of the refrigerator while you have everything out and reset the controls to normal settings.

If this doesn't help, there may be a mechanical problem with the air transfer control flap/door that will need to be fixed.

Hope this helps.
