Can't connect to XBOX Live because of Strict Nat settings Netgear router WGR614

I have a netgear router WGR614V1.5, I have the latest firmware, but still can't "OPEN" my NAT settings to play xbox live w/ my buddies...I've tried port forwarding TCP/UDP 3074 and UDP 88; Also enabling the Upnp, and also the DMZ host. I am using an ethernet cord connecting the Xbox 360 to my wireless laptop.

Any suggestions???

Thanks

I am having trouble connecting to my xbox through my netgear wireless router can it be fixed my xbox shows strong wireless connection but when I go to hook up it drops out.

  • marlowisws Sep 06, 2008

these netgear routers are ridiculous, the settings should not be this complicated, I think I am going to go wired until logitech makes a wireless router, or someone who knows how to make a user interface that people without CS degrees can understand. Simply aggravating beyond the point of belief. I would advise not buying Netgear if you want to play on xbox live.

Using Xbox Live with NETGEAR Routers
NETGEAR has Xbox certified routers!
Note that the listed, certified firmware may no longer be available; later firmware is likely to work, but is not certified unless listed.

Can't connect to XBOX Live because of Strict Nat s - sbgxblcompatiblegrnwht001.gif
There is no information on what will be certified in the future. But if an existing model does not appear on the product dropdown on NETGEAR Home Page, then it will not be certified.
If using older routers such as RT311, RT314, RT328, RH348, RP114, or RP334, or if you have problems with connecting to Xbox Live, refer to the Microsoft Xbox Troubleshooting page.
Other Troubleshooting Information
  • Upgrade to the latest router firmware.
  • Open ports 88 and 3074. (There are non-NETGEAR sources that say this is unnecessary, however it is.) For a description of opening ports, see How is Port Forwarding Configured?
  • The MR314 works with 3.26 firmware, using port forwarding.
  • There is no known workaround for the RO318.
If your Internet connection uses PPPoE, set these filters:

I tried to find this "Access Point Mode" on the WBR 1310 as suggested above and I couldn't. I spent hours on the phone with support from Xbox, D link, and my ISP Bell Sympatico's technical support trying to get my Strict NAT to Open. I finally got everything working and if you follow the instructions below in order, you will too. Here's what you should know if you have the D Link WBR 1310 and Bell Sympatico Internet.

1. Log into the router and under the Setup tab click on "Setup Wizard" then on the next page click on "Launch Internet Connection Setup Wizard" In step 1 leave the password unchanged and click next. On step 2 select your timezone. On step 3 this is important, select PPPOE setting. On the 4th step leave the Address Mode in Dynamic and enter the Username and password supplied to you by Sympatico.

Once you have configured your Router to work with the PPPOE settings that Bell uses (Most DSL providers use this setting) you should now get a Moderate reading when you do the Network test in the Xbox dashboard.

2. Now go here http://www.portforward.com/networking/static-xp.htm and follow the instructions to setting up a static IP address on your computer.

3. After setting up a static IP address on your computer, go here http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Dlink/WBR-1310/Xbox_Live_360.htm and follow the instructions. Something you should keep in mind which isn't mensioned on this page is for each port you forward under the box that says "IP Address" do not put the IP address of your computer. You put in the new IP address of the Xbox 360 which was one of the 5 that was generated on the previous link. What you are doing is giving the Xbox 360 a new IP address and that new IP address needs to forward these port numbers to the Router.

4. Go into the Xbox dashboard and edit the Network settings. Under Basic Settings click on IP address and set it to manual. Now enter in the new IP address you chose for the Xbox 360. The subnet mask and the gateway is the same as your computer. (You can find these by clicking start, run, type in cmd then when the box comes up type in ipconfig/all

Under the DNS Settings it should be set to automatic and under Additional Settings leave them empty. Run the test in the dashboard and it should now be Open!

Also after reading several forums you don't need to enable DMZ host and leave the UPnP enabled. By default they are set this way anyway. Hope that helps.

Can I just as what any of this **** means?
We have answers here like "1. Log into the router and under the Setup tab click on "Setup Wizard" "...

...and this means what exactly?

I have spent the best part of two days actually trying to find out how to access the settings on the router - never mind actually CHANGE anything!
I am now taking my wireless attachment thingy back to the shop to swap it for a game and a bloody cable.
Oh, and the NETGEAR router... going in the bin too as soon as someone recommends a decent replacement.

Hi.
I have a D-Link WBR-1310 Wireless router and I found the way to open my NAT.
I tried everything (DMZ, Port forward etc...) and the only thing that worked was to enable an option called Access Point Mode.
That option changed my router into an access point, completely disabling NAT protocol and the result was the I had an open NAT.

Good luck

You need a excellent signal to your Xbox. Xbox requires a constant connection. My son as an Xbox and we had to run a wire connection to the Xbox no problems after that. Or you need to move your wireless router to the same room as your xbox to get a stronger connection.

NAt Settings

Are you sure that you are forwarding the correct ports? I also have xbox live, and it seems the closer my router is to my xbox, the better the NAT gets. (wierd) Honstly though, unless you are encountering some extreme lag, I wouldnt worry about it.

How do i get NAT OPEN

To get the NAT open, you have to forward specific ports. If you are doing this for xbox live, then call microsoft and ask for an "agent." Tell them that when you test your xbox live connection, your NAT is strict or moderate. They will give you a specific port to open. With that information, You go to your router's setup, and look for port fange forwarding. Enter the information given and save it. For further assistance, call netgear's help line and they will help you.

NAT set to strict

upgrade your router to the latest firmware that can be found here:
http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/WGR614.asp

after upgrading the firmware, press the reset button for 30 seconds, then reconfigure the router. you will need to re-enable upnp if it is disabled, and open up ports UDP 88 UDP 3074 TCP 3074. i would also reserve the ip for the xbox and if all else fails set the xbox as the dmz host.

hope this helps,

Xbox 360 live and netgear WGR614

Down load the new firmware and install it in your router.

http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/WGR614.asp

Use UPnP. If your router supports this. Turn it on. The router will work out the ports it needs to open for Xbox live. If your router does not have this feature, check the manufacturers website for the latest firmware. (also make sure portforwarding and/or DMZ is turned off as they interfere with UPnP)
