The white stain is due to mineral build up on your iron.
Try flushing the iron with a vinegar solution to dissolve the mineral deposits then purge with demineralized water. Only use demeralized water in your iron. The first time you may want to test it on a scrap piece of cloth to insure all of the minerals have been removed.

Your iron has a poor contact in the temperature control.
I would suggest you take it to a fixer-upper place and have it checked.
If you don't mind mailing it to Canada, I could do it.
Check the Yellow Pages. There must be someone in your neghbourhood who still does such repairs.

Make sure that before you attempt to slide the water tank back that you operate the Tank Release Knob.
