Kenmore Whispertone 12 Cord Retractor Replace or Retension ?

I see the answer to how to get to the cord retractor (removing the 4 clips on the pedal) but my question is this: The spring that pulls the cord into the machine doesn't have any tension once it gets about 1/2 way through retracting the cord.

Can the spring be "re-tensioned" --tightened up or can it be replaced? Has anyone run into this problem and fixed it?

Thanks

Sounds like your cable reel mechanism is broken. Go to this link to see a step-by-step guide for replacing the reel. You will need to order it from a spares provider. Google is your friend. Prices around £23.

It is pretty tough to fix a retractor. Maybe hook direct and wind up the cord manual like uprights.

SOURCE: VACUUM - 1. How to open

Hi,most cord reels have a metal flat spring, wound very tight, like in an old clock (if you remember cartoons very well, you can imagine the spring). It's this coil that retracts the cord. The locking in/out mechanism is similar to a venetian-type blind pull; you can release the blinds, and lock them in any position you choose by pulling slightly at an angle.
The cord reel itself is mechanical; however the cord usually is soldered or otherwise wire-connected to a metallic contact, which in turn is connected to the motor. So if a cord is yanked hard enough to dislodge the connected contact, the vacuum will not run. But, it does take a big yank!
Cord reels, as a rule, are only good for so many ins-and-outs. Eventually they all fail. But, how convenient they are!

Hope this helps.

  • The motor / cord compartment cover must be removed to access the cord reel. There are four screws that hold the cover to the chassis. Two of the screws are found under the cord-retractor-foot-pedal on the top back of the canister. To access these screws the pedal must be removed. To do this, press the pedal down and look (from the top) for the four plastic clips that attach/hold the pedal hinges to the cover. There are two at the end corners and two in the middle. Using a long, thin flat-head screw driver (or similar instrument) press each clip to unhook/popout the hinges. Note: the foot pedal spring will also come out when the pedal is removed.

The other two screws are found under the curved hinges of the vaccum bag compartment cover. To access these, lift the cover as if accessing the vacuum bag. Keep pulling the cover back until the hinges release from the motor cover. Don't worry, it is disigned to do this and will not break but it may require a little force. A long phillip-head screw driver will be needed to access and remove each screw

Cord will not remain OUT..keeps slip-sliding back in

The return is stuck on your cord retractor. Take the machine apart untill you can see the retractor, then there is a button or wire that retracts the cord. If it is stuck in the down possition simply reset it, if it is broke you must replace the complete cord retractor.

That pedal is hard to break, use a large flat blade screw driver, stick it from the bottom and back of the pedal and pry up, it will pop off, watch for the spring, it may fly off.

Most of these you have to take off the cover on the back end where the cover retrack button is. Usually it has a catch, 2 on each side, use a screw driver, pry up near each corner to release it, then you can get to the cover over the moter and cord reel. Remove the 2 screw and put up and out.

There are two screws just to the rear of the accessory compartment. There are also two hidden screws under the cord retractor lever. I tried to get the retractor off by pulling upward on it, but it just wouldn't come. It is not screwed down but held by friction via its hinges. The way I got at the last two screws was by drilling a couple of holes thru the plastic cord retractor lever - about 1" from the end of the lever on left side (looking from the rear of vac) and about 0.5" from the other end of lever.
