Question about Craftsman 17.5 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model

Craftsman 20 hp 42 in deck leaks gas into the oil pan.

I have had to change the oil in my craftsman 4 times this year because after i am done mowing and it sits, gas leaks through the carb and into the oil pan. We are talking entire tanks of gas. I have taken the carb apart twice and completely cleaned with cleaner and put back together just to have it happen again. Is there something I am missing? Is this a common problem with Briggs engines? Please help as I don't want to change the oil everytime I want to mow...

Could put a inline shut off valve in the fuel line and shut it off when you finish or fix it right? .
you need to replace the float the needle valve and seat ( the part that the needle valve pushes against to stop the gas inlet maintained by float level.
You need to find you engine mod# type# code# code is not important
look on overhead valve covers for these #s they are right in line wherever you find the #s if its an overhead valve engine
go to partstree.com and find briggs logo and click on it and enter your #s or choose from the ones they give and match them with yours and you should be able to find the part numbers you need for this carb.and get them locally or order from them.
maybe this will help cure your issue

After finishing mowing my lawn the other day, my mower leaked (dripped) gas from beneath the bottom of the carberator. What should I do to get the leaked stopped?

Ok, first thing you need to do is check your oil. Make sure no gas has gotten into the oil. if it has then be sure to drain it.
carberators today are really having problems with very tiny dirt particles making them malfunction. after cleaning my carb 3 times in one year and having to change the oil each time, i decided to get a 6 dollar fuel shut off valve. i cut the fuel line and installed the valve. when done mowing i turn the valve off and have not had a problem since. in fact i have put a valve on all my small engine equipment.

I would take the bowl off the bottom of the carb.. Probably you have clogged up holes that let the gas into the bowl.Or either the needle is stuck up not allowing the gas to flow...That's why pouring gas in carbs would let it run for s few seconds....Also try fresh gas..Gas doesn't have led in it anymore..It don't last year from year...After grass season is over..Buy some from Lowe's or home depot..Pour it into your tank and let the motor run to get it done into the carburetor...Then the next year it will start

1st thing, check your dipstick up inside the cap part of it and make sure the O'ring is there and in good condition.
2nd, make certain when you put it back on that you get it on straight and firmly seated. They will only seat one way properly the other way creates a leak into the crankcase and causes oil consumption and smoking. You should be able to tell if it has been improperly installed by an excessive amount of oily dirt accumulated around the threaded area of the cap

Tractor starts then stop running

It will either be the stator that needs changing or the carb needs to be pulled off and cleaned

Gas is mixing with oil

I had this happen to my tractor several years ago. Turned out since the fuel is gravity feed, the fuel would syphon into the engine after a time. I took a zip strap and looped it around the fuel line loosely and attached it to higher part of the cowling, to put a slight HILL if you will in the line to break up the syphon effect. Worked great no further problems with that. Mine is a 1996 craftsman lawn tractor 42' deck 15.5 HP briggs. Been a work horse for years, but as of a week ago "issues" with tranaxle.
hope this works for you.
Happy mowing.

Oil leaking way to much

It is a leaking valve cover gasket (easy fix) or the gasket between the head and crankcase ( most likely but much harder to replace). Check the valve cover gasket first.
