I've connected the drive to the power supply and plugged the USB cord into my iBook G4, nothing is happening. No SimpleDrive icon on the desktop, nothing. What do I do?

    I have a Mac so the my comp etc is not applicable. I think I need to format it from NTFS to FAT32 for my mac, I don't know how to do that. I can't find the storage unit anywhere, not in finder, my harddrive etc. How do I format the drive if I can't access it? Is this a lost cause for someone with not very advanced computer skills? Should I jsut sent it back and buy a different one?

    that's what I was afraid of! Thanks so much for your help. And no thanks to SimpleTech for the defective harddrive!

You may not see any icon on desktop but should see "found new hardware" at the bottom right by the time. Right click My Computer and click Manage. Under Storage click Disk Management. You should find your drive here. If its a new drive, no letter may be assigned or it may not be partitioned or formatted yet. Right click on the drive to format it and to assign a drive letter. If its already formatted and works on other computers, let me know because it could be a USB error or faulty cable.

    That puts a new twist on things. MACs are great for detecting and formatting large drives. I would have to say that the hard drive is defective unless it is your firewire/usb cable.

I think you bought a piece of junk especially if you cannot hear the hard drive spin when you connect the power supply.
I suggest you get a tech savy friend to check out this hard drive for you.

I plug in both usb connectors, and nothing happens. Device does not appear on laptop. Pinfarina 160GB, red case.

Try connecting it to a different computer -- if it still fails to work, then there is nothing wrong with the computer; the fault is with the SimpleTech unit (either the USB-to-disk-drive adapter, or the disk-drive inside the case).

This few things can be the cause

  1. the usb port that the external is connect to is not 2.0
  2. the pc port is not supplying the required amount of power to the usb external
  3. you may be using a usb extension cord instead of connecting directly to the port
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS

  1. Make sure that you are using the supplied usb cord or a very similar one
  2. change the usb port that the external is connected to (it could be a faulty low powered usb port)
  3. remove any usb extention card that is attached (leave on the supplied one)
  4. try connecting to a friends pc and see what happens
  5. during connection to the pc make sure no other usb device is connected
  6. maybe it is time to get a new external case. should not coat more that $15.
good luck

The external storage device has several major components:

* USB cable

* external power-supply

* disk-drive inside the enclosure

* USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

Try a different USB cable.
Try a different USB port on your computer.
Try a USB port on a different computer.

Take a multi-meter, and measure the output voltage/amperage of the power-supply,
and compare with the specifications on the label of the power-supply.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and attach it as a "slave" drive in a desktop computer, to see if bypassing the USB-to-disk-drive adapter bypasses the problem.

Look at the label on the disk-drive, for manufacturer, product-number, serial-number, and manufacture date. Access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status" to see if the warranty still is valid. If so, the drive can be replaced, at minimal cost to you.

Buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Search online for a professional "data recovery service". For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.

Do I need an electrical plug in to work this drive. Nothing happens when I plug in the usb cord.

the device is powered by the USB plug,so no there is no other power, if it doesn't work either the USB port is defective or the drive is defective, the last being more likely.

My ibook G4 has stopped reading my external dvd drive.

If you external DVD drive connects via USB, try rebooting your iBook. (Sometimes a static shock will shut down your USB channel, and only a reboot will reset it.)
If this doesn't work, choose "About This Mac" under the Apple menu, then click on "More Info." Under Hardware, click on USB. See if the drive shows up as one of the attached USB devices. If it does not, the drive or cable may be bad.
If you have another computer available, connect your DVD drive to it. This will tell you whether the drive has failed.

Why wont it work?

doesn't seem that "Simple" if you ask me. I don't think PC hard disks are compatible with Mac's. you might have to get a Mac compatible External HD.
