The screen is really blank or you can see a very dim image? If you can see a faint image, probably you have to replace the screen inverter.
Test your laptop with an external screen. If there is no image on both internal and external monitors, check the memory. Reseat the memory module and try again.

Re: lcd screen is on, but blank - nothing - no desktop...

Have you made sure it's not just switched over to external monitor? Check by holding the "Fn" button (usually at the bottom left of the keyboard) while pressing the key (often one of F1-F12) marked with different monitors. On mine this is F5. This may toggle it back if you have toggled it off by accident.

If it really is broken, I'd say $200 for a new one is a fair deal, at least if the computer itself is fairly up to date and powerfull.

Do i need a new screen?

Yes, you will need to replace the LCD screen and controller that comes with it. Screen occasionally just go bad and you end up with split screens like yours where one part is normal and the other is dim. If you send your laptop to repair or use geek squad you may have to pay about 400 bucks. If you order the LCD screen it should cost you about 175 to 200 up to 300 depending where you look.

My lcd has 3 black lines, around 10-12 pixels up 3 days ago, and now it affected the pixels around it, in a span of 3 days, it multiplied to around 80 pixels that's just dead. what do i do? i dont want...

The only option in your case is to have the LCD replaced so Istrongly suggest you take it to your repair man. A reasonable price for that type of repair isabout 50 dollars plus the cost of the screen. You may find a price in the rangeof 50 to 100 dollars plus the cost of the screen though. Any more than that and I would find adifferent repair guy! Ebay is the best place to find the cost of your screen, just type in you model number and add the letters "LCD" to the end.

There is a lamp behind the screen that lights the LCD panel up! Those florescent lamps are only good for 10,000 to 25,000 hours (depending on the model). One year of 24/7 is about 8000 hours. One girl I know left her's on 24/7 and her's died within two years and it cost her about $350 to have fixed.

Which is a waste, sinceif it is the bulb, they only cost like 25 bucks. But service centers usually change everything; the LCD, lamp, and the inverter. Anyway your LCD is just fine. It's either the lamp, inverter (circuit which generates about 800vac), or the wiring.

Supposedly you can't use an inverter with a different lamp or the other way around. So keep that
in mind.

A line on my screen.

A line usually indicates a hardware problem with the lcd. There's really nothing you can do but replace the lcd. If you replace it yourself cost should be around 100, if a shop does it figure 150-200.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Blank screen - has some vertical stripes but nothing else

If there are random lines going through the screen that usually means that the lcd panel is going. You can buy a replacement and swap it out, but it require major dis assembly of the unit.

If you are the do-it-yourself type, you can goto E-Bay and find a new panel for your model, they usually range between $75-$125. If you are not comfortable taking the laptop apart, then you want to take it to a local repair shop. That may cost you something near $200-$250 for parts and labor.

Power light comes on but laptop won`t boot up

This could be a few things, but is most likely a defective system board. If your hard drive light (usually looks like a can) is fluttering and you hear the Windows desktop music when it launches, then you could just have a defective LCD screen or inverter. If there are no sounds or flickering lights (just a steady power light) you could have a defective board or failure in the cpu. If the computer cost less than 200.00 i would not get it fixed, I would get a used identical model replacement and swap the hard drives, because most computer shops would charge about 200 bucks to replace your system board.

Screen changes to a small box of colored lines.

Check whether it is only the screen that is faulty by
connecting it via a vga monitor cable to a desktop screen.

If you do not have a friend with a desktop computer then most repair shops will do this for you.

Once connected there is a function button which will switch between the laptop screen and the monitor

If it's only the screen it may be worth fixing, circa $200

My Gateway laptops display does not work

It sounds like a loose wire. If you are out of waurantee open it up and see if there is a wire that has come loose. Only it you feel comfortable, doing this. First check the connectors on the side and make sure the vga/dvi, is not loose. If you are going to end up paying a tech to fix it, then it would be worth your while to open it up and give it a shot. Let me know if you want to do that, and we can go through what's needed. good luck, by the way is this XP or Vista? and if you go into the properties, settings, advanced, desktop, is the desktop set to stretch or center or tile?

No Screen on Notebook Compaq nC8000

Unfortunately, sounds like the LCD backlight or backlight power board is bad. If there is any warranty, lucky you. Otherwise you need replacement parts. The output voltage on the powerboard needs to be checked to determine what needs to be replaced. Backlight Approx $20, powerboard Approx $65. This is the cost for parts alone if you are into electronics, otherwise a repair shop would end up charging you $200 - $300. There is a slight possibility that it is only a loose connection (cold solder joint or loose cable), but the laptop would still need to be opened, Lots of luck
