Question about Brother XL-5340 Mechanical Sewing Machine

Similar problem For me, the whole needle assembly has fallen off (the metal thing it goes into, with the perpendicular cylinder and knob sticking out the side of it). What's worse, a small, curved piece of metal fell off too, and I have no idea where it's supposed to go!

Sorry for the confusion--I'm still getting used to the interface of this site. I read another post and clicked something like, "I have a similar problem," which made me think my post would be grouped with that original post. (In fact, I didn't know that this actually got posted, because when I logged in I was taken to a "how much do you want to pay for fixya?" page, so I left. Weird.)

I would find and link to that other post I was replying to, except I gave more details than their simple post, so there's really no need to. The point is that the needle holder won't stay attached to the metal cylinder that it used to happily stay attached to.

I *did* discover where the small curved piece of metal (a thread guide) is supposed to go: it sticks into the whole needle holder assembly that won't stay in.

    Thanks for your help!

That would be the thread guide. You need a small allen wrench to put this whole thing back on. There is a hole in the right side, looks like a hole, it's blackish, but is for allen wrench. The curved metal piece slides up into a tiny hole from the bottom near where needle enters then slide whole thing back on machine and tighten with allen wrench.

Thanks, I couldn't get the needle clamp assembly to stay on and thought I had broke a screw---I found an allen wrench in the right size and fixed myself!!!

Have a Kenmore 1357. Was working perfectly until I began sewing satin ruffle onto fleece. Seems to siege. Needle won't even try to go into material. Just goes to top of presser foot and stops.

Is it a mechanical machine (not computerized)? Did you oil the internal metal parts that rub against other metal parts? With an older mechanical machine, frequently the old oil turns to goo and sticks things rather than lubricates. Use only fresh good quality sewing machine oil. Hand rotate the wheel and place 2 drops of oil every place metal rubs metal (including the bobbin area). To help loosen things, direct hot air from a handheld hairdryer into the interior of the machine.

This process was used on an older Kenmore that had totally frozen, but it was working again within 15 minutes.

I need a manual for a Pfaff Hobbylock Serger 4762, where can I find one

I can't find a manual for this model, however there is a general hobbylock book http://sewingonline.co.uk/library/know-your-pfaff-hobbylock.html which would certainly be a good start.

You may find best source is to contact Pfaff locally and source it from them direct.

You could also try www.diplodocs.com, I can't see this manual but if you go through similar model numbers manuals you may see one very similar. Overlockers/Sergers are very similar in many ways so once you've mastered one, the next one is pretty straight forward. Four tension knobs, 2 needles and 2 loopers is the norm - to get a three thread stitch you just don't thread one of the needles. Tension adjustments alter the stitch formation, and you should have a stitch length knob on the right side of the machine along with a flywheel and if it has it, differential feed (which controls the feed dogs so you can stretch, or compress the fabric as it goes under the foot).

There are some good general how to use a serger books in the marketplace too which should help. Threading up, many machines have a diagram inside the front flap, colour coded dots on the knobs, eyelets and loopers. And oiling points are often marked on this diagram too. But basically oil the two loopers where they slide/move on another metal part. Some good info here too http://sewing.about.com/od/sergersoverlock/Sergers_Overlock_Sewing_Machines.htm

Hope this assists you a little.

Replace the needle thread tension dial

If the entire assembly has fallen out you will find if you remove the top left hand cover that there is a small screw in the casting where the tension assembly goes, replace the tension body to the correct position and tighten the little screw.

My needle broke and a piece of metal fell out of machine

this sounds like the needle guard it is usually held on by the same screw that holds the needle clamp it should fit so that it comes across the needle at the front to stop your fingers being sown but not interfere with the needle try turning by hand before turning back on.

I am at my sister-in-laws and she couldn't find the manual to her sewing machine (husqvarna viking daisy 335) I just want to know how to change the bobbin, how to thread the machine, how to adjust the...

drop in bobbin, only goes in one way (you can't do it wrong. follow white on white arrows to thread it. It's hard to describe over internet (lift presser foot, first go behind the metal guide, then downto left around tension assembly then back up. Around take up lever, then back down to just above the needle, to the thread guide at the top of the needle. Needle goes in flat sode to the back.
stitch length is the bobbtom knob (2.5 is normal s.s. length) The tension should be at 5 or so (between 4-6) I hope this helps

Bobbin holder turns and keeps bending needles

hi,

the whole upper assembly may have come out of alignment when the machine bent the needle, the upper cover may have to come off, and study the inner metal area where the needle is attached for alignment bolts or screws, maybe one has come loose. On ours if you choose the zig zag and adjust it all the way out it will do that everytime. maybe download the user manual at www.brother.com and see if theres something in there also.

Bobbin Case

I'm having a similar problem today. I took out the bobbin case and when I went to put it back in, the whole system locks up. I've tired cleaning, changing needle taking the metal plate and piece that holds bobbin case out and put it all back in after cleaning. Nothing. My symptom is I can't get a complete stitch, the needle goes down, the whole deal acts like it will work and as soon as the arm of the bobbin case gets to 8 o' clock on the gears, It jams and won't hardly move. I cannot pull the bobbin case out easily after this. Perhaps there is someone out there that can help us!

Needle won't move; something stuck/dislodged

Can you remove the bobbin? Sometimes when thread gets bunched up under the lower plate it will force the bobbin out of position. Try taking it out and cleaning any loose thread and lint from the area. Put a couple of drops of oil on the outside of the bobbin case and re-insert it. Make sure you lower the needle and pull the bobbin thread through to the top and back behind the needle before beginning to sew again.
Hope this works!

My needle broke and a piece of metal fell out of machine

Totally happened to me last week. I discovered that the metal piece that fell off and holds the needle has a small screw that holds it in place. It needs an Allen wrench (tiny one) to tighten it back into place. I just lucked into figuring it out.
