That's actually a mica "window" (cover) for the microwaves to come out. And it sounds like the magnetron started arcing and burned a hole in that cover. Either that, or some food (frequently spaghetti sause) got splattered on it, and the microwaves heated it up so much that it burned a hole in the cover. Does the microwave oven still work (heat)? Do you see or hear any arcing? If the microwave oven still works and there is no arcing, you can just replace that cover. Check SearsPartsDirect.com or RepairClinic.com.

SOURCE: lightning inside microwave oven

You better be carefull my friend or you will start glowing in the dark!! LOL Just kidding. But I wont kid about how dangerous that metal cylinder can be with the holes in the top. Thats the magnatron. It has very high voltage going to it and you should never ever touch any wires going to it even if its unplugged as theres a capacitor in there that holds a charge for a time. f the oven is over several years old, Im sure the magnatron will cost more then a new oven, after you add labor and such. It just migfht be time to upgrade to a new microwave?? Good Luck

It sounds like what you are describing is called a "waveguide cover". You can purchase a replacement from a local parts supplier, or on-line at www.repairclinic.com. It is very easy to replace.

Microwave cardboard inside has got a hole is it safe to still use

No it will kill the magnetron with contamination from the food/drink vapour.

Arcing inside microwave

unless you are familiar with these, leave it alone. Over time small particles of food become carbonized inside the oven, hence the electrical display. the solution is to clean it after every use.

Arcing inside and there is now a small hole on the panel side. Is this fixable?

Hi,

It looks like there's lightning (arcing) inside my microwave When you see arcing inside your microwave, it's because of food or liquid left in the cavity or on the wave-guide cover:

  • If the wave guide has any burn spots, replace it and clean the unit well.

  • If the cavity has any burn spots, spot-sand it smooth and touch it up with microwave interior paint.

Note… If there are any burn holes in the cavity, don't use the unit-seek help from a qualified appliance repair technician.

Thanks for contacting Fixya

My Sanyo 1000W microwave is shooting sparks!!!

you need to replace the cavity cover "the cardboard like",the antenna bearing set "the gun barrel like" and the gear motor. If the "gun barrel like" is stuck up because the gear motor is not rotating excessive heat will occur inside the microwave thus burning the cavity cover.

Humming sound and burning smell.

I had the same problem. I replaced the wave guide/cover and everything was fine. It is a piece of cardboard inside the microwave that covers the magnetron. Mine was saturated with grease, and was damaged by the fire. If yours is still intact and not that greasy, You can carefully remove it. Clean both it and the area inside the cavity with an alcohol based cleaner. If there is so much as a pin hole in the cover it will need to be replace. When grease somehow gets behind the cover an arc is formed which causes the problem.
