I have a MacBook Air and to use wifi I have to sit directly next to the wifi router. All other macs/iPads etched in the house are fine. Hardware or software issue?

Most certainly a hardware issue. The MacBook in question probably has a connectivity issue. What solutions have you tried thus far?

Tried all sorts of software related fixes but have the same conclusion as you. Just wondered if there was anything obvious I had missed. Thanks.

This sounds like either the antenna wire for the WiFi has become disconnected from the WiFi card or the WiFi card is defective. Either way, I think this should not be an expensive fix.

I think there are 6 ways (at least?) to connect this printer:
(1) Direct to Mac (or PC) via USB Cable (2) Direct to Mac (or PC) via Ethernet Crossover Cable(3) Ethernet to router/switch, with Mac/PC also via Ethernet to router/switch(4) Ethernet to router/switch, with Mac/PC via WiFi (802.11 wireless)(5) WiFi to router, with Mac/PC via Ethernet to router/switch(6) WiFi to router, with Mac/PC also via WiFi.
As (1) should be simplest, tried this first. First document would print instantly and completely, next doc would hang in queue with unexpected msg, "Printer is offline." Only way to print 2nd doc was to power cycle (off-on) the printer. This problem occurred whether 2nd doc was sent to printer before or after 1st doc had printed. Tried 2nd USB cable, tried new driver, tried reinstalling printer; same problem. Spoke to both Samsung and Apple support, including both on a conference call; never got this to work and never clarified if problem was in printer hardware/software, driver, or something else. Both companies now showing this issue as unresolved.
Nothwithstanding USB problem, did succeed in modes (4) and (6), although custom wireless config needed since my network does not broadcast SSID and requires an encryption password. Procedure required connecting first via Ethernet, obtaining Configuration Report by holding down orange button for 5 seconds, then using browser to connect to the printer's IP address. Also required different driver for wireless config (as opposed to USB).
Bottom line: What seemed simple - USB direct connect - proved unworkable, but wired and wireless network config works fine.

Mac computers have always been known by being stubborn in wifi matters. Please try the basic steps, like reset SMC, most of the times it sorts this issues. If problem persists and you have access to the router, make sure you have WPA2 Personal AES.

try reseating the wireless card or airport card. if that doesnt work. turn off your wireless router and your macbook. leave off for 10 mins then turn on the router first then macbook. try to connect and see if that fixes the problem.

When i move away from my dlink DIR-615 router my macbook cannot get wireless internet (airport). this isn't a problem for anyone else in my house, just me.

sounds like the wifi card installed in your macbook will need replacing. these are quite cheap to buy and have fitted.

Issues with my Ipad wifi, IPAD wifi not working

According to Apple, the iPad might not automatically rejoin known WiFi networks using third-party routers that are dual-band capable (802.11 b/g and 802.11 n) when each band’s network uses the same name or use different security settings.
Apple’s recommendation? Try creating separate network names for each separate band’s network (ie: add a G to the end of the name of the 802.11 b/g band) and making sure both bands’ networks use the same security settings.

Poor wifi performance

Doesn't matter, those signals can't get up to your study cause of the basement. when outside it's fine. try putting the router at a higher end, like on a stool or try the highest point in the basement. Or try getting some high gain antennas that will boost the signal.
