Re: Paper size detected is not supported when making a...

When I saw that so many other people were also getting this error message, I thought sure there would be a solution posted by somebody before too long. Guess no one could figure it out!

The problem continued and was getting extremely irritating so I went and spent a couple of hours on HP's support site and finally figured out what to do, even though I never did find the exact error message we've all been getting.

Basically, the fix is to change the paper size default setting in the Copy Menu from Automatic to Letter. You do this by pressing Copy, then #6, select Letter (which is #2), and that will bring you back to the Copy Menu. Scroll down through all 10 selections until you get to the bottom which is Set New Defaults and select this.

I've tried making several copies and it has worked every time error message in sight! However, if you're trying to make copies onto paper other than standard 8.5x11, you'll have to select that with each individual job since there will no longer be an "Automatic" detection.

Hope this helps everyone else who has had this annoying problem!

Re: Paper size detected is not supported when making a...

Red Sonya I have had this problem for a few months and HP support was of no help what-so-ever. I had already checked for new driver updates and needed none. I had already gone on my computer into Start/Printers/Setting Preferences/ and made the same changes that you spoke of - to no avail. Then I tried doing it the way that you said. Now I no longer get the error, "Paper size detected is not supported." I got, " Unable to Copy." So, in order to get rid of that I had to simply turn my printer off. Now that it is back on it is working very nicely.

Thank you soooooo very much!

When I want to make a copy it tells me "Paper size

Good day, Regarding the error message that your getting, that means the paper where you want to print that document is not supported by the printer. Usually you'll the see supported paper size if you click the print option or print setup for your printer. The only way to resolve this is to use the appropriate size of paper like.

You can also try this steps to change size for the documents you want to print

>Open the File menu and click Print.
>Click the Settings tab
>Click on Paper Size. A list of paper sizes will appear
>Select the size you want.
>If none of the selections are suitable, select Custom. A box will appear inviting you to set your
own measurements. Enter the width and length that you want.
>Click OK.

These are the usual paper size use. It's 8 1/2 by 11 inches and the other one that you could use in most printers is 8 1/2 by 14. The first one is known as Letter size, the other one is known as Legal size. Hope this information help in resolving your issue. Have a great day.

Error messages and printing problems

Paper mismatch errors occur because the printer scans the width of the envelope before printing. If the paper size setting in the printer driver does not match the paper actually loaded in the printer, the printer reports a 'Paper size error'.
Try to adjust the printer and envolopee settings..

I'm trying to copy from 8 1/2 x 11 paper to 8 1/2 x 11 paper. But the printer says the paper size detected is not supported. Job cancelled. It printed fine a couple of days ago and I've changed NOTHING!...

That error comes from the sensor on the right side of the carriage at the bottom. There's a light that shines down on the paper to determine size. Unplug your machine with the carriage in the middle and use a damp Q-tip to wipe up under the right hand side of the carriage. The Q-tip should come back dark blue and that error should go away.

My HP 3210 won't make copies

HP has a pretty good online troubleshooting site, accessible at support at I'm not familiar with that particular error, but you might try the steps outlined in this link for starters...
If changing the size settings doesn't work, try changing both size and type and rebooting, then changing back to your standards. That should force the driver to be reloaded. Sometimes all you can do is reset the printer. To do this,, turn off printer, unplug both power and data cables, wait a few minutes, then reconnect and turn on again.
But search the online database for more specific instructions for your model.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take a moment to kindly rate this post....thanks!

Can't get the copier to scan only 8.5*11 area on glass

Set your original settings to the actual size.
You are using the auto recognition feature which is over-ridden when you specify the size manually.
It will try to match it to the nearest size it "knows". That is why the stamp is detecting so large.

Instructions will appear.... starting like this... (i used C/P, and it may not come out slearly after I submit this answer)

Issue: How do I specify the paper size and type?
Solution: Specifying the Paper Size and Type

Specifying the Paper Size and Type note_white.gif
  • When making copies on LTR-size paper after having continuously copied on paper smaller than LTR-size paper, the copies may be dirty. To prevent copies from being dirty, wait about 1 minute before making copies.
  • The paper in the multi-purpose feeder is fed prior to the paper in the cassette.
  • The settings changed in the Menu do not return automatically to the settings you set previously. Change to the previous settings again if necessary.
  • When making copies of a small size or heavy paper*, etc., the copy speed may be slightly slower than usual.
*The paper type should be selected in the Menu.
  • If you intend to make a copy and print with a thermal transfer printer using the same sheet of paper, make the copy first. Failure to do so may make copies dirty or cause a paper jam.
  • When copying onto transparencies, remove each transparency from the output tray as it is output.

Specifying the Paper Size At the factory, the paper size has already been set to [LTR]. Normally, you can make copies in this setting. When making copies on other sizes of paper, you need to specify the paper size according to the following.

  1. Press <Menu>.

  2. Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select [COMMON SETTINGS], then press <Set>.
  3. Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select [PAPER SETTINGS], then press <Set>.

  4. Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select [PAPER SIZE], then press <Set>.

  5. Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select the appropriate paper size (LTR, LGL, EXECUTIV, A4, B5, ENVELOPE, or FREE SIZE), then press <Set>.

black_dot.gif When [ENVELOPE] is selected: white_square.gif Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select the type of envelopes (COM10, MONARCH, DL, or ISO-C5), then press <Set>.
black_dot.gif When [FREE SIZE] is selected: white_square.gif Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select [VERTICAL SIZE] or [HORIZONTAL SIZE], then press <Set>. white_square.gif Use the numeric keys, or press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to specify vertical and horizontal sizes of the paper in millimeters (mm).
Available range in [VERTICAL SIZE]: 127 mm to 356 mm (5" to 14")
Available range in [HORIZONTAL SIZE]: 76 mm to 216 mm (3" to 8 1/2") white_square.gif Press <Set>. Repeat the steps above to specify both vertical and horizontal sizes of the paper.

  6. Press <Stop/Reset> to return to the standby display.

Specifying the Paper Type [PLAIN PAPER] is selected as the default paper type. When making copies on paper other than plain paper, you can specify the paper type according to the following. Specifying the paper type can prevent poor copy quality, or the printout not being printed correctly.

  1. Press <Menu>.

  2. Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select [COMMON SETTINGS], then press <Set>.

  3. Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select [PAPER SETTINGS], then press <Set>.

  4. Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select [PAPER TYPE], then press <Set>.

  5. Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select the appropriate paper type, then press <Set>.

You can select from the following paper types: - Plain paper (17 lb to 24 lb (64 g/m2 to 90 g/m2 )): [PLAIN PAPER] - Heavy paper (25 lb to 34 lb (91 g/m2 to 128 g/m2 )): [HEAVY PAPER], [HEAVY PAPER H]*1 - Transparency: [TRANSPARENCY] - Label*2 : [HEAVY PAPER], [HEAVY PAPER H]*1 - Envelope: [HEAVY PAPER], [HEAVY PAPER H]*1*1 If print fixing is not sufficient when printed with [HEAVY PAPER] selected, select [HEAVY PAPER H].
*2 A label that can be loaded in the cassette is a standard type (label standard card) only.

  6. Press <Stop/Reset> to return to the standby display.

Paper size error when copying - Office jet 7210

I got the same error, and had it for months. open the ink door where it says office jet pro, it folds towards you, wait for the ink cartage to position to the left, then look inside and far to the right, and see if there is a wadded up peace of paper inside. Reach in and pull it out, it fixes the problem

Paper size error

What that means is that you put in a size of paper that your printer can't use. Apparently, the paper you loaded was detected by the printer and was recognized as being a size it isn't designed to use. has a web page for your printer that tells you which paper sizes you can use for your printer.

Product Specifications

When the web page opens, scroll down to the Paper specifications area and look for the Paper sizes table. Use only the paper sizes that are listed there in your printer. Good luck.
