Re: Hard drive not working properly

What is the original OS? If it's XP you can't install 98 over the top of it without formatting it to FAT32 first.

Have replaced computer. Motherboard dead on old one. Is there any practical way I can get pictures and such from old computer. It will not power up. Thanks

You should be able to tak the hard drive out of the old one and put it in the new one as a secondary drive. There is a good chance, though, that the drive won't fit. If it doesn't, you'll need something like this.

Only a hard drive can contain the data. Other storage mediums are CD, USB flash drive and cards. If your system has any of these, you will easily spot and remove them.

Turning to the hard drive, a computer can have more than one installed so be sure to remove each one before giving it to the other person. No hard drive means NO information stored so be assured.

My HD is full is it possible to add memory? (Not RAM)

Ok, if you are asking if it is possible to ad memory to your existing drive, the anwser is not, you need to put in another HD, or get yourself an external HD.

I use an external HD, it works great for me.

Hope this can steer you in the right direction.

Kind regards

How do you transfer hard drive from old comp. to new?

For just the data, get an ide to usb converter and connect it to the new computer, and just drag and drop.
You cant move an entire hard drive to a new computer because of driver issues, but you can use windows built in files and settings transfer utility.

How to Add an Extra Hard Drive Need more storage

From what i've read, it has a SATA hard drive with it. check the PC's Motherboard. If it has an IDE slot with it, then yes you can use it. But if not, you may need to purchase a new SATA HDD to use as an extra storage for your PC. Hope this helps.

I want to free up space on my hard drive and move it to another

well you gotta ask yourself if you have an external hard drive or removeable hard drive which are basically the same thing... if so you can open my computer and then open in a separate window the removeable hard drive and drag and drop files that you want to save!

I have found 2 websites taht can help you somewhat:
1) this is the one with the steps that can help you,

2) This site you may download the Win98 bootup disk to Fdisk you HDD and format to Fat32 or you may download the Win XP startup disks to format the HDD and create NTFS partitions:

My external hard drive wont work on my laptop the light comes on so it is powered but i cant locate it anywhere to access it wen i click on the short cut it just says its unavailable

First of all, The shortcut only works if its connected and if its assighned a different port, then it wont work, so just go ahead and delete that for now.

Right click on " My Computer " and select " Manage" When that opens, select " Disk Management " and on the right side it will show all storage devices such as any plugged in pin drives or network drives or external hard drives.

You should see it there and it has a letter attached to it. I.E. C: for your main hard drive, A: for floppy if you have one, D: is normaly the CD Drive.

Depending on what you have or if your on a network, you should see your hard drive, probably as E: or something different.

If you have had alot of different storage devices connected or network drives, it could be that the drive letter its trying to give your Hard drive has already been issued to something else.

on the right, select the external drive ( be sure thats it, dont go changing you C: drive by mistake )

right click and select ( Change Drive letter )

Then change it to something you know isnt in use like Z: or W:

apply, close and windows should recognize the drive and you should have access to it.

If not, come back and we can go from there.
