Question about ASUS A7V8X Motherboard

1 Answer

Hi there

i tried to turn my pc on this morning, there was a smell of burning, i check this out and found the smell coming from the PSU.

i have tried a new PSU, power led is on, hdd and power light on constant, nothing happens, the mb power led is soild green, agp led is off, all that happens is the CPU fan runs, and nothing else, no display, no post, no beeps.

no burn marks on the motherboard or PSU, removed the video card, powered on no beep, just CPU fan running and hdd and power led on constant.

i have cleared the comms by pulling out battery and doing the jumper free and jumper mode and still nothing.

i have tried to post with only the processor attached, i get no beeps.

please can someone tell me if it is likly to be mb or CPU

When a power supply goes out the way yours did, it's going to fry the MB 99% of the time. So you're going to need a new MB. It's possible that you CPU is ok, but that could also go too. I would replace the MB first, then the CPU if that doesn't work.

Try searching the internet for "A7V8X-LA Manual" seems to be an ASUS product used eg in HP computers, I found this
document (users guide), for example (I do not have the time to read it, nor check the other leads that turned up in my search)

I have an asus p48vx-x motherboard

you may check
1) your Intel pentium 4 3.2 GHZ cpu socket 478 processor #sl7nb what's FSB?( see on the chip surface, if 533 FSB can use but 800FSB could not match your motherboard if which is not support 800 FSB. that's why no display.
2) check RAM stick speed, try to increase a level, for example 266 to 333.
is this helpful please feedback thanks

Start up

good day!

I have the same asus motherboards I check first the memory if it is clean next is battery. Try to check also the unit if it is clean.
Secondly, after doing my first suggestions if it doesn't work try to check your processor maybe the lock 4 sides are not mounted properly. resulting to sudden turning off. or sometimes electric current disturbance.
Third, Ty to check your Hard disk drive ( HDD) may be the cable connection has he problem. If you use sata try ti clean the plugs. For the IDE you may use cleaning procedures too.

Cpu can not boot

I don't think it is a ram issue.Try this when the computer is booting, hit the F8 key. That boots you into safe mode where only the most necessary drivers and programs load. If it loads in safe mode that is good. A little bit of daignostic work can locate the problem after that.

Power supply

I think your problem is not with the power supply, its the hdd or memory thats causing the problem. try to check the cables, and re insert the memory then start up your pc again.

Motherboard or CPU dead?

The burning smell (if it was a fishy type smell) may have come from the mobo psu 21 pin connector where you plug in the psu. The connection may not work properly because of melted plastic deposits which may be why you are unable to turn it off at the switch. Just check the old psu connector for signs of rusting pins and mis-shaped connector. If you have a fairly recent mobo and processor ensure that the power supply doesnt need the power supply from the psu, unlike some processors where the power is taken from the ZIF mobo socket.
