My Macbook A1181 won't boot. When I turn it on, I

My friend's Macbook A1181 won't boot. When I turn it on, I hear 2 clicks from the hard drive and the screen flashes once very briefly. Hard drive keeps on spinning without making any further sounds and the screen stays blank. I plugged in a new unformatted HD; same result except no clicks from the new HD, but the screen stays blank. I tested Ram with my other laptop, the memory is good. Any suggestions?

This is possibly a backlight issue, especially if the fan and or hard drive are spinning. Take a flashlight and shine it at the screen and see if there is a faint image. If so then it is your baclight which may mean the cable or inverter board. Parts are available on eBay but this requires a fairly involvec strip down including taking apart the screen. The other fix is to buy a tested working used screen but make sure you know the exact model number as cables did change through production. This repair is still fairly involved so might be beyond some folks confort level.

My apple a1181 screen is black and won't turn on when everything else is powered and it's not broken. What can I do?

Firstly how do you know it's not broken? Connect the MacBook to an external monitor using the adapter and see if it boots. Reboot system and disconnect external display adapter.

Macbook a1181

Currently there is no way to do this unless you are on Mac OS X 10.7 or above. If so, you must shut down your computer, turn it on, and right after you turn it on hold down the option key. Hold it until a screen comes up that looks similar to the one below.

Then click on "Recovery HD" and click the arrow. It will boot into recovery mode and you can restore it using an internet connection.

Macbook will not boot

Could be an fsck (disk check) - how long has it been like that?

Otherwise, boot while holding Cmd+S and post the last few messages that pop up.

Replace hard disk

Any 2.5" SATA hard drive will work (2.5"=notebook size).
SATA III (three) is what you want.

I would use Carbon Copy Cloner, or SuperDuper to copy your drive. Borrow a friend's USB or Thunderbold external hard drive bay to attach the drive until you copy your original drive. Then just swap the drives, and your MacBook will boot on the new drive.

All the best to you,

Macbook A1181 black take the Snow Leopard DVD but wont boot from it. Ejecting it. (the drive is working) and pressing C dont force it to boot from the DVD.

When you start up your computer, hold down the option key. This will bring up the bootable devices menu. Depending on wether or not you have an Operating System installed, you should see either 1 or more icons. Click on the one with the CD icon that should be labeled "Snow Leopard". Once you have clicked on the icon, click the arrow beneath it and your Mac will boot off the OS CD.

My macbook when i uploading i turn off macbook and i turn on macbook didn't boot up just see turn around aound forever not go to windows i lost system disk unable to boot macbook

Check for a failing hard drive
Trying booting from the Mac OS X install disc. insert the Mac OS X install disc. press the start button, while holding down the "C" key on the keyboard
Once you are running from the disc. go to Disk Utilities select the hard drive click the "repair permissions" button at the bottom.
If you get any red errors listed or it doesn't seem to finish repairing the permissions you have a failing hard drive and it will need to be replaced.
If the repair permissions finishes without any problems. You will have to reinstall the operating system.

Hard drive failure

You can contact this companies regarding data recovery. The "Genius" was wrong about the drive being retuned to Apple, that will only occur if you have a system under warranty, and you would be returning it to Apple to avoid being charged.

As far as replacement hard drive going for $325, that too is pretty steep, see this link:
