Check the resistor mounted on the back side of the dash, resistor dead no spark. you can strap it with wire to see if it fires, dont run it this way.

Sounds to me, if no spark to points I would suspect the coil.

Do not have spark on plugs

You need to check the spark plug wires. Check the continuity with an ohm meter if you have one. Rule of thumb is 10000 ohms resistance for every 12 inches of wire. Also make sure to check the coil as well. This should be located at the other end of the spark plug wires. Hope this helps and good luck.

Ford 9n converted to 12 volt alt still 6 volts at dis. runs rough till i jump 12 volts to coil and then it runs good. Will this damage coil and points?

If you are doing 6 Volts at the distributor you must either have Resistor wiring or a separate resistor in the system. They make both 6Volt and identical 12Volt coils for your unit.

You will eventually burn up a 6Volt coil if you use 12Volts on it. There is an aftermarket company which has Antique supplies. Carpenter(Maybe John) has supplies for Tractors, cars and trucks that are earlier models.

Do a Web search using his name and marry it to Tractor parts, etc.

Ford 9N problems; Changed plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, and ignition coil. Point gap at .015, new condensor. 6 V battery fully charged. No voltage drop to ignition coil. Results, no spark.

You might check ground. some of these units were ground positive. did you switch the posts? This would cause problems since the electrons are on the inside of the condinser.
Good luck

1940 9n will not start, have replaced the points, condensor, 12 v coil, wires, new carb and the stark plugs. The only thing happening is gas coming out of the itake from the air cleaner. Also I replaced...

Is it cranking? Is there a spark? If there is no spark. I would look at the points again; unless you mean you replaced them now instead of in the fall. Look at the points and if they look frosted then try sanding them or replace them again. They can go bad quickly if there is moisture in the cap. Recheck the gap. It is possible that you got a bad condensor if the points are good. Check the cap and rotor for corrosion and remove this coorosion or replace them. Check that you have voltage at the coil. It might be a bad ignition switch. If all this is good turn the crank till the points close, turn the key on and check for a spark with the coil wire within a 1/4" of a ground when you open the points with a screwdriver. If it has spark; try spraying a little starting fluid into the carb. Let us know what you find out.

The 12 v conversion is the way to go. 6 v is a pain. It's getting harder and harder to get parts, and running off of battery power leaves a lot to be desired, especially if you've ever had to haul a dead battery back to the barn. I had a Farmall model "B", 1947, 6 volts. 12 volts was like a whole different tractor. Just my humble opinion!
