Question about Western Digital WD Passport 250GB Portable Drive 250 GB Hard Drive

Open Question

WD Passport 250GB External Hard Drive with slow write speed

I recently decided to start using the Time Machine on my MacBook Pro, and in order to do so needed to reformat the WD Passport I've been using as a go-between for the last year or so. (Model Number isĀ (WD2500XMS-00), if it makes a difference.) In the past, I've uploaded huge amounts of data before (Last I remember was 50 or so Gigabytes, which I know didn't take nearly as long as it's been running now...) and it's never been this... slow. It had no problems reading; It copied 56 Gigs in 90 minutes to the computer, so I could re-format the drive itself. However, when I began the system backup... Something seemed off. Almost 4 hours later and it's only managed to write 12 Gigs of the 125 I need to the Passport. I'm wondering if this is a sign of something wrong with it, or I've just been oblivious before.

SOURCE: malfunctioning WD passport that windows doesn't detect.

Inside the case is a regular laptop size harddrive.
Laptop harddrives are 2.5 inches across. (2-1/2 inches. Desktop harddrives are 3.5 inches)

I would suggest the external enclosure the harddrive is in, is defunct.
I would suggest buying a new external enclosure, and putting this harddrive in it. Then just plug the USB cable in, (As you did before), and download your data, to be ready to transfer.

You need an external enclosure that is Sata, and is for a 2.5 inch harddrive. These are relatively inexpensive.
Let me show you some examples:

SOURCE: WD Passport plugged into mac then PC, but no drive letter

Hi

You can either format the drive using the PC or install MacDisk on your PC witch will allow you to view any Mac formatted drive on the PC.

Click the link to download macdisk7.5.7.5 or reformat the drive to NTFS which the mac and PC will be able to share if the need arises in the future.

SOURCE: WD Passport Drive running SLOWWWWW on time machine

USB s slow and when you have huge files it tends to bog it down. it is better to have a firewire transfer. another reason could be your computer is doing to much. leave the computer at one task. walk away and let it work. otherwise you will be using memory.

SOURCE: xp not recognizing my 250gb WD passport

The Western Digital My Passport line, besides the Essential Series, is originally formated for a Mac (in the HFS+ format) and as such cannot be read by Windows PCs. You can either get a program to read the External such as Macdrive, or format it to NTFS or FAT32; formats that are readable by Windows. I would recommend formatting it to NTFS, because you can only transfer up to 4 Gigabyte files to FAT32, while NTFS is nearly limitless.

SOURCE: wd passport not working

I am sorry to say this but by the sound of it you have accidentally reformatted your drive. The only thing you could do at this point is to try to recover your lost data which I'm afraid my not be able to be recovered depending on if the drive is solid state or not and if it has encryption on it. My suggestion is to try and recover your data using a data recover tool such as helix.

I hope this has helped.

Thank you,
Norse

There is a WD utility that controls the drive setup. One thing it controls is the sleep time. This sounds like what you are seeing. I know the default sleep or hibernate time is annoyingly short. All you need to do is run the utility look for the sleep time and change it to a much longer period. I don't think it can actually be disabled but you can set it to an hour or so.

Do you connect & disconnect the drive according to WD's recommendations here? Try another cable. (If yours was wearing out, that might explain why it only connected some times.) Try another usb port. Check the power supply (another receptacle) Unplug other usb devices from the system.
See this article. Good luck!
