Elna Diva 8000 -- Timing is off

I have an Elna Diva 8000 and I believe the timing of the hook and needle is ''off''. I have opened up the top plates and I can see that the needle is not properly aligning with the hook -- the hook is bending the needle. Can I adjust the timing myself or do I need to take it to the repair shop?

Needle seems to be hitting on something. Needle not bent and is inserted properly. It's sewing ok, just a clicking noise when needle is down. Old machine Elna Diva. About 25-30 years old.

Try installing a brand-new needle and make sure it is inserted all the way up into the needlebar. It if continues to hit, the machine quite possibly is out of time.

Where can I find a operating manual for my Elna 9000

a operation manual will not so how to time the machine, what your
talking about is a service manual and elna does not sell them,,
only their sewing machine technicans have them, the machine
would have to be taken to a sewing machine repair shop for
timing or any other adjustments.

Something is "clicking" while sewing machine is

Firstly eliminate the needle, put in a new sharp one. A blunt, bent or burred needle will cause clicking, popping or squeaking sounds.

If you can still hear a clicking noise, then it is possible that the needle is touching the hook when down in the needle plate, and this would indicate that timing is out slightly.

If you take off the needle plate and bobbin cover, foot and remove thread, then sew very slowly watching the needle and hook, you may be able to see/hear the point of contact.

I've never adjusted timing on my machines, always left it to a technician. But there is some general images on timing repairs at http://www.sewusa.com/Sewing_Machine_Repair/Sewing%20Machine%20Hook%20Timing.htm if you are technically minded.

Bobbin drive gear

You need to get the gear from your elna dealer. To time the machine, you want the tip of the hook to pass just over the top of the eye of the needle when the needle is in the left most or right most position depending on which side the eye of the needle will be higher

Pressure foot on Elna Diva

Make sure your presser foot is in the lower position. Open the door on the left and it has 3 settings. You may have moved it up for sewing something thick, and forgotten to lower it again. Sometimes things are simple, though your problem could be mechanical.

Bobbin casing for elna 8000

There is one small metal piece 3/4 inch long and shaped like the letter "T" that fits under the right hand needle plate snap one screw. Attach to underneath square nut and can be seen sticking out from the top holding the bobbincase in place after the top plate is replaced and everything is back together. If this is not it, a picture would help as I have repair 100's of Elna 5000 to 9000's.
